Drainage tube left inside?

I think my doctor left a piece of the drainage tube in my abdomen. While bathing tonight, I felt something hard. I will be contacting my primary tomorrow for an ultrasound to see if a foreign object was left.

I am disturbed by this. If it is true, that means I will have to be cut open again to remove it. Not what I am planning since this could interfere with a planned family vacation.

I am a nervous wreck right now but I am trying to keep it calm for the next 10 hours until the doc office open.

I am normally a calm person but this has gotten me kinda wound up. Maybe I am panicking for no reason. I will wait and see.

Don't panic! It is very unlikely there is any type of drainage tube or other piece of equipment inside as all of that is carefully counted to make sure not even a sponge is missing.

Go ahead and call your GP if you want, but you should also touch base with your surgeon. The hard spot could be a surgical complication that needs addressed. It could be a swollen lymph node, a blood clot, a hematoma, a hernia, etc. Try not to touch the area and if it becomes red or swollen, and/or you spike a fever, seek medical attention immediately.

Re: Drainage tube left inside?

Where did you feel it? By an incision? Could it be scar tissue forming?

Re: Drainage tube left inside?

Went to the doc today. She felt it was nothing but to keep me at ease, she sent me for Xray. The images showed nothing. A NP believes its scar tissue but told me that if it gets red or inflammed to return.

I feel better now.

So glad you got it checked out! Keep resting as much as you can.
