Urgent advice needed, in hospital over a week now.
I need help. My wife had a hysterectomy on Nov 16th. After a week at home of total constipation she went to the ER and they kept her because she had a fever, infection and was bloated. This was the day before thanksgiving. That saturday they took her in for more surgery and the stomach surgeon said they had to push her intestines back up out of her uterus area, but then the OB who did the hysterectomy said the surgeon found her intestines all stuck together and had remove the sticky stuff or scar tissue and separate them again. I don't know which is true. Now my wife is still in the hospital, stomach getting more and more bloated, has not eaten in over a week and the doctors keep telling her to walk around to start things moving. Its not working well enough and I am very concerned because now they want to look for a twisted bowl on the CT, (which they did not find on the ER CT) and are taking about cutting in to her intestines in yet another surgery if they find a blockage of some sort. I DO NOT want them cutting her again, mainly because these doctors are not communicating and wanting us to just trust them. My wife is getting bigger and hurting more every day. What can we do? She has tube up her nose that goes to her stomach to get all the bile and such out. Solids and liquids are out of the question. She still has a fever and infection somewhere, they don't know where, and is on multiple antibiotics and an antifungal because of yeast found in her urine. I am worried of course but I want to DO SOMETHING and they are seeming unconcerned and just want cut cut cut if things don't do what they want! Please, any advise??? I don't want my wife to get any worse and I don't want to lose her!!!!
Mark

Omg, that sounds horrible, I am so sorry Mark. Can you call your insurance company and see if you can request another doctor? What about moving her to another hospital?
It really sounds like second and third opinions are in orde and the insurance company should be made aware of these horrendous issues.
Good luck to you and your wife, I am really sorry to hear that.

If she's already in the hospital receiving care, I don't know what advice anyone on a message board can give you. I wish you both well.

No matter what, You and your wife are in my thoughts and prayers Mark, get on the phone and call around is what I would do. Call every OB/GYN in the phone book just to find out what they think, maybe someone else could give you better advise, as I am not a Dr, but talking to other Drs may help!
Good Luck

Mark, you love your wife and are so very worried and I understand that you just want to do SOMETHING to help her, my heart goes out to you.
Please have faith in the care she is receiving. Its very hard to think clearly but take a step back, if the CT shows a blockage or an intussuseption and the naso gastric tube isn't helping, sometimes surgery can be the only option. Reach out for a second opinion and even a third but please have faith. If there is a blockage she may need the surgery. Two differing explanations may be because one of the Docs was trying ease your fears while one wasn't. Get them together address your concerns, get the answers. You have it in you to get you both through this.
:ave faith in your wife, yourself and the medical professionals in charge of her care.
You are both in my thoughts and prayers.
Tammy

Re: Urgent advice needed, in hospital over a week now.
We are not doctors, as everyone has pointed out. It seems to me that what you need to do is insist, absolutely insist, that the doctor in charge sit down and thoroughly explain to you what the situation is, and answer questions about any conflicting information you have received. You have rights. Every hospital has the patient's rights posted and it includes information. Call the patient liaison department and get someone at the hospital working with you to get the answers you need. Don't let anyone put you off or walk away without answering you. But you also need to have your questions organized, and maintain your self-control, stay focused and if something doesn't seem right, ask again until it is clarified.
From what you have said, it seems like both things could be correct - her intestines could have shifted and they could be covered with scar tissue. Those are not mutually exclusive. If your wife has a blockage, and the doctors need to cut in to find it, then that is what they need to do. Trust that they do know what they are doing. Not to say they don't make mistakes, but this is why you need to insist on communication with the doctor. Some things just can't be seen on x-ray. I know this from my cat having a blockage in her intestine. We could see on the x-ray that there was a blockage, but we couldn't tell what it was or why. Surgery was the only way the doctor could see what was going on.
What you need is some confidence in your doctors and what they are doing, and in order to get that you need to insist on that conversation. Good luck, and God Bless you and your wife.

Hi!
I'm sorry to hear you're both struggling with this at the moment. There is a site for men which you are welcome to use, linked here: Mister HysterSisters. Since men are asked not to register at HysterSisters.com, we ask that you respect that guideline and not post on the message boards of this site. She's very lucky to have your support and I hope you'll find information at the Mister HysterSisters site that will benefit you ... and her in turn.
Sending healing thoughts and hoping she gets better soon!
