My Luck---Staph Infection
I dont know if I have any like cases to mine, but this is really a bummer for me. This surgery was my very first. At 1 week I had some oozing from the staple holes and was given 10 days of Cipro "just in case". I had a continuous pain on my right side and was told this was stitches. At week 4, I got a fever and flu like symptoms, completely thought it was unrelated to the surgery. Two days later Im at the ER with blisters above and below my bikini incision. Blood cell count was ok and CT scan didnt show anything on my right side although I had a small ball forming. Was sent home and told to see my GYN on Monday. These blisters became a line and then began to grow up my tummy following lines that were stretch marks from 3 babies. Monday I was given Levequin (sp?) and by Thursday with no improvement I was admitted back to the hospital for 1 week. I recd 52 bags of 3 IV antibiotics, 1 of which was very caustic to my veins and painful. I had to have 6 IV lines over the course of the week just to tolerate receiving all of the IVmeds. I was discharged with a script for 14 pills costing $1,000.00 (thank goodness for good insurance) and today with 3 of these left to take, Im going crazy with a yeast infection and complete body itching. Benadryll helps but doesnt take it completely away. The blisters are gone, skin color is back to normal and my right side still hurts some but the ball like knot is disappearing. I had never heard of an Infectious Disease Dctr until all of this. I am really a very healthy person and very little gets me down until this one. I am so desparate for my life to come back, to be back fulltime to a job I enjoy and to have no limitations. Is there anyone out there that can compare "notes" on this one with me?

You poor thing! You've really been through a lot. My incision came open and got infected following my surgery but nothing like what you went through. Hang in there. Things will get better.

Hi there friend. I have been watching for you to post and tell your story. It's probably hard for you to see right now but based on what you posted today you ARE progressing towards wellness compared to where you were a couple of weeks ago. I haven't seen anything on this forum yet that comes close to what you have been through. I hope every day continues to get a little easier for you. I am just glad that you felt well enough to be at the computer today. My most heartfelt wishes to you. Gwen

My Luck---Staph Infection
Well I got an infection on the inside where my incision busted open and I too had the flu like symptoms (still do). I was on Antibiotics for 7 weeks and then had the worse yeast infection of my life. The pus is finally gone and the pain is barely there, and the yeast is under control.. These things take time to clear up, just take it easy and let your body get rid of this crud... Sounds like you are progressing in the right direction, best wishes to you.

My Luck---Staph Infection
To My Same Day Sister,
Thanks for keeping me in your thoughts. I hope and pray that I am nearing the end of this segment of my recovery. I see the Infectious Disease Dctr tomorrow and I think he will release me as visibly it looks good. GYN thinks the all over body itch is a reaction fo the Zyvox but IDD says I need to finish all 14 pills as long as I do not break out in a rash. Every nurse told me to expect the yeast infection due to so many heavy antibiotics. GYN thinks I will need a 2nd oral dose of that med later this week to completely clear up that issue. One funny part is that my husband was thinking how longing he would be for sex after the surgery. Now he's almost scared to touch me. I think he may need a few drinks and some seducing to forget about all of this, ha ha!

My Luck---Staph Infection
So sorry that you have been experiencing all this trouble.
I developed an abscess shortly after my surgery, received fairly toxic antibiotics also. Managed to have only 3 IV sites as they only pumped the IV at 250 ML/Hour. When they weren't pumping meds, they continued to pump regular potassium bags at the rate of 150 ml/h. That was to keep the "track open without too much stress".
I am one week out of the hospital (2nd stay) taking huge horse pills every few hours. I saw the infection diseases Dr this morning and he changed my meds and will only have to take them twice a day now bu they are still very powerful antibiotics.
Hope you are feeling better soon.
As far as the yeast infection goes, you really can't treat it until you are finished your antibiotics (as long as you are taking them, they are killing the friendly bacteria). You can take OTC Acidophillous capsules (health food store)or drink/eat milk, yogurt, cheese or any other product that has had acidophillous added. This will reintroduce some friendly bacteria into your system but as soon as you complete your meds and have been cleared, definitely get something to treat your yeast infection. If you don't clear that up, you and DH will continue to pass it between yourselves with sex.

Went to Infectious Disease Dctr for final time
I know a little more detail now. I had MRSA which is a antibiotic resistant strain of staph infection. It is only treatable with more powerful costly antibiotics.
Sad news is once infected I am more likely to be reinfected than someone who has never had the bacteria colonize inside them. In General 30% of population have staph on them, 1% have MRSA. The bacterial is just waiting to get inside via a wound. Now I have to advise health care, future hospitalizations etc that I have been infected with it.
Usually obtained in the hospital due to surgical wound/bladder catheter or IV. During TAH I had all 3...go figure. The bacteria can live for weeks on hospital equipment, bedding, computer keyboards etc. Unknowingly, caregivers can transmit from room to room as well.
I do thank God for all the good things in my life and for letting this clear up. I appreciate all the love and prayers from my family, friends and Hyster Sisters.

My Luck---Staph Infection
Hi
I was saddened to hear of your experience.
I too ended up with the MRSA infection following my surgery in July 2004. I am still having various problems. My wound opened within 4 days of having staples removed, a sight I would be happy never to see again in a lifetime. I visited my GP who arranged regular dressing changes and a course of antibiotics and sent me home . It was a further 7 days before I was swabbed and found to have the MRSA infection. I was devastated and very afraid, I was re-admitted to hospital immediately and placed in isolation. 10 days in isolation and very sore arms from the IV antibiotics (my veins actually collapsed) I was sent home with very strong antibiotics and pain killers.
For 10 months I had to endure the district nurses coming round to change dressings on a daily basis. Then twice weekly visits for another 2 months. My wound is now almost healed leaving only a tiny hole which still has to be covered.
I have been told I am now colonised and prone to repeat infections. I have repeated yeast infections (I had never before had one) I need surgery on my legs but no surgeon will perform the sugery until it becomes an emergency as I am too high risk.
I sincerely hope and pray that you will not have to suffer as long as I have done and wish you a speedy recovery.
love and best wishes
kazee

My Luck---Staph Infection
My Goodness, your story makes mine seem so minor. My wound was healed and closed. I have taken 2 script doses and 1 otc pack for yeast infection. I still feel I have a slight one and will probably repeat the OTC again. They are miserable, like poison ivy down there ( I catch poison too) I spoke with the Infectious Disease Dctr about the colonized and also a friend of mine is in charge of a hospital lab else where from my surgery. 8 weeks after you are off of Vacomicin (IV med for MRSA) and Zyvox, Oral kind of Vacomicin you can be swabbed again. If you were not previously a carrier then you can be cured of the infection from what I understand. I will go after New Years and do this even if it is out of pocket for some clarity. Lets keep in touch. My name is Anita, 44 yrs old, TAH, I live in Maryland. My best email address for contact is anita.knapp@aarid.com or anita.knapp@comcast.net (i dont read this one as much). I hope you finish your recovery with no further problems.
Hugs,
Anita
