24 hours later...

I found out yesterday that I need to have a partial abdominal hysterectomy...wow. I'm 39, I've never had kids and I guess I never well. (Sorry for the self pity, but that's really been freaking me out.) I just periodically start crying about it. Ugh.

I'm going to be fine...I know that. I just want to cry right now.

Don't feel too bad, it will be for your health. You can always adopt, it's not the same, I know. I'm 25 and I will be having my hysterectomy 9 days before I turn 26. Good luck.

No easy way to hear the words that a hysterectomy is in your future. I wish you peace and hope you take all the time you need. I will keep you in my thoughts.

Re: 24 hours later...

I'm 39 too, and also without kids, and going in for a TAH in a few days... I do grieve about not having kids of my own. But I'm blessed with so many other good gifts in my life-- and friends who are willing to let me be auntie to their kids-- so I'm thankful for that. I'm also hopeful about what the hysterectomy will ultimately do for my health. Anyway, I'm sorry you're going through this, and I'll be thinking about you! It's okay to be sad!

Peace-

Re: 24 hours later...

Oh, (((sister))) I'm sorry to hear you're facing surgery right now.

A hysterectomy is a big deal. No question about it. It's not something that you can be expected to fly through, and you are expected to go through the gamut of emotions both pre-op and post-op. In fact, I'd be worried about you if you weren't having ups and downs right now.

The issue of having children is so huge, that we actually have an entire forum called Aching Hearts which deals with the whole area of grief, mostly surrounding the loss of fertility. We're there 24/7 to help you through this.

It's not self-pity you're feeling.... it's anxiety and sadness about this surgery. It's natural. And it's OK to have your feelings. They're never right or wrong, they just "are".

Many as you prepare for surgery.

Re: 24 hours later...

Sweetie, I think you need to cry. It is a very emotional time for you, and those tears are a normal part of your grief process. Work through them, if you need to, get some counseling to help you process. You are right, you will be ok, and there are other options for having a family. But right now you are hurting and it is ok to cry.

Post here often, vent all you want, seek help, we are virtual shoulders for you to cry on and we will walk with you through.

Re: 24 hours later...

I'm sorry, Surpr1sed. And I understand. I'm 40 and have never had kids either. The first time my doctor mentioned the idea of a hysterectomy last year I started crying right there in her office. It didn't help that she was pregnant at the time!!!!

You have every right to grieve and work through the reality of losing a piece of yourself. After a year of dealing with the idea, it has gotten better. It will get better for you, too.

Take care of yourself.
