Sleeping ovaries or surgery depression?

How can you tell the difference between shut down ovaries and post surgery depression? I'm 28 and 6 months post op. super moody to the point where I think I am manic but I don't get hot flashes. I have pain during se which I attribute to vaginal dryness but my doctor hasn't suggested any hormone therapy. I'm just confused as to whether I need to treat depression or menopause

Re: Sleeping ovaries or surgery depression?

I am sorry you are struggling. Definitely try some lubrication to help with the dryness. Maybe it would help to see a therapist or social worker who might be able to help you sort out how you are feeling. Hugs!

Re: Sleeping ovaries or surgery depression?

Lady711, I am so sorry for how you are feeling and what you are going through. Do talk with your doc about your pain and about how you are feeling. If you want to see if your ovaries are functioning, you can take your basal temperature each morning before you get up. Women do this in NFP and to determine ovulation. The basal temperature is low between the beginning of the hormone cycle (when you would have had your period) until ovulation. At ovulation, the temp starts going up and stays up until the next cycle begins. By charting your temps, you can see how your body is cycling and if ovulation is happening.

Depression is also a very real possibility. Please take care of yourself and talk with your doctor soon. Please let us know how you are. Hugs.

I'm so sorry to hear that you're feeling down. I think it's definitely worth talking with your doctor about at this point to figure out how to proceed. And here's an article on Depression and Menopause which may be of some help. I've struggled with depression before and I know it can be hard to feel so out of whack, especially just having gone through major surgery. Sending

Re: Sleeping ovaries or surgery depression?

Thank you all for your kind words. I'm almost positive my feelings are due to depression more than menopause. I am a mother of a 10 month old so I'm still nursing. Do any of you know if my basal temp would still vary? I know some nursing mothers go years without periods so I wonder when I would be able to tell if my ovaries are "awake".... To be honest, this is a new term for me... Do they go to sleep after surgery? How long can they sleep for?

Re: Sleeping ovaries or surgery depression?

I was told my ovaries could go to sleep and if they did they could stay asleep short term or forever. I had to sign a form stating I understood that before surgery. Good luck.

Re: Sleeping ovaries or surgery depression?

Mine seemed to "whack out" for about 3-4 weeks after surgery -- although I didn't have any "bad" symptoms, just felt colder than normal for a few weeks. That's a good question to the Le Leche League -- if your basal temp would change while nursing. I was never so lucky with my babies... my fertility also came back between 4 and 6 months
