Large fibroid

Hi, I'm new and a little nervous about my upcoming surgery. I have several uterine fibroid with the largest one being about 11cm. My uterus is enlarged so it will be coming out July 26. Is there anyone here that also had large fibroid. It was a total shock to me since I felt no pain, pressure or heavy bleeding.
I did get a second opinion and it was the same diagnosis.
I had a C-section with my daughter and was wondering if the pain/recovery is about the same.
Thanks for any advice

Re: Large fibroid

Hello!

Since you're asymptomatic, it may be very worthwhile seeking a third opinion before undergoing major surgery. There are some doctors who specialise in fibroids and could, therefore, offer more options other than a hysterectomy. You may wish to read through our <link> Fibroid Resources to learn more about some including UAE/UFE, MRgFUS and myomectomy.

Best wishes!

Re: Large fibroid

Hi I am new to this forum too.
I have experience of large fibroids. 8 yrs ago I had 2 fibroids. The largest being 20cm and the smallest being 8cm. I was told my ONLY option was a hysterectomy. So I got a second opinion who gave me several options and I opted for a myomectomy. The surgery and recovery is similar to a c-section. Since my op I have gone on to have a c-section and years of quality life. I am now that bit older and the fibroids have returned so I am scheduled for a hysterectomy Aug 11. Without that second opinion my life would have been completely different.

Re: Large fibroid

I have no experience with fibroids, but I do have a lot of experience with c-sections. I've had 3. My hysterectomy was an abdominal last week and yes it's definitely comparable to a c-section (I think.) I think it's even a little easier because the uterus is gone and you're not waiting for the incisions in that to heal in addition to everything else.

Just wanted to share my experience. Good luck and {{{HUGS}}}

Re: Large fibroid

I had an abdominal hysterectomy due to a large fibroid. I've never had a C section myself but 3 months down the road I've read a lot of comments from fellow sisters who have gone through both surgeries. They usually say is much more difficult recovery.

Re: Large fibroid

Another good resource is uterinefibroids.com - it will give you many treatment options. Hysterectomy should be considered as a last resort! I had uterine polyps and a fibroid that were treated by endometrial resection and ablation. The surgery is done under anesthesia through the cervix. The entire uterine lining is removed, and then cauterized. There is very little chance of regrowth of endometrial tissue or anything else, as the cauterization cuts off the blood supply. The surgery was extremely successful and I had no further bleeding or problems.

Hysterectomy has many possible adverse effects physically, emotionally and sexually. One of the big physical effects is the increased rate of cardiac disease. Another is the possibility of bladder and rectal prolapse. These structures support one another, so if you remove one, it makes it much more likely for those around it to prolapse. I have had 3 prolapse surgeries in less than a year! Please look into all of your options before you make a decision.

Re: Large fibroid

Thank you all for your kind words and informed opinions. I have thought long and hard about this and have not made my decision lightly. My second doc did give me several options, but after discussing it with her and my husband, I think I just want to get this over with. It's what's best for me.

You guys are awesome

Cheers
