Feeling down- 8 days post hysterectomy
Hi all,
Physically, I think I'm doing quite well. I am managing my pain with OTC but still feeling sore.
What is bothering me the most is how I feel emotionally. I have one remaining ovary, so I don't know if hormones are effected.....
But I just feel completely down. I'm fine during the day and around friends or family. But the moment it is time for bed, I am afraid to go to sleep. I become slightly anxious and tearful.
On days I am on my own, I feel morose.
I've read online that this can be common following a major surgery or anesthesia; however, I've had a hip surgery in 2012 (which would be major) and 4 laparoscopic fulgurations for endometriosis. I don't recall feeling this way.
I don't typically suffer from depression or anxiety, so I am out of my element here. Please tell me this is to be expected and will be ending soon. Or at the least, is common enough that if I bring up to my surgeon I won't experience flashbacks of doctors staring at me with no clue what's wrong with me (aka pre-endo dx).
TIA for any guidance!

Re: Feeling down-8 days post op
Hi,
What you're experiencing is not uncommon.. Reduced estrogen contributes to fatigue, insomnia, moodiness-hormonal feeling, anxiety, hot/cold flashes, etc.
It takes time for the ovaries to rebound. If your symptoms are bothersome, then talk to your Dr. Also stress induced anxiety from surgery + hormones is what youre experiencing from dusk to later. Its like "sundowners" If your Dr doesn't suggest any form of hormones, ask about Atavan/Lorazapam or similar for anxiety for the time being.
Also be sure to get a little sunshine, eat mushrooms for vitamin D. Meditate, deep breathing are helpful.

Feeling down- 8 days post hysterectomy
A hysterectomy is much different than the other surgeries you've had. Youve had something removed that was a major presence in your life for many years, and it's quite common to go through an emotional upheaval from that. If you're okay with eating soy, then 1-2 daily servings of tofu, edamame, or soy milk can help with the hormonal issues. Also, it's possible that the surgical antibiotics have indiscriminately killed off the good bacteria inside your intestinal tract, which accounts for up to 90% of seritonin production; a probiotic supplement, including a broad spectrum of Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium strains, can help to restore them. Foods high in tryptophan and Vitamin B6 can also help to boost seritonin production; that includes most seafood, tofu, whole eggs, turkey, nuts and seeds, and bananas. Also, as LailaStar suggested, and as I found out for myself, getting out of the house and taking a daily walk can really help. Also, if you haven't already done so, be sure to join your recovery thread, where you can connect with your surgery week sisters, who might be experiencing similar issues. Best wishes for your continued recovery!
