I had a TAH with a vertical incision for a different reason, cancer. Frankly, I think that TAHs get some bad press just because the whole idea of someone cutting your abdomen open *sounds* really scary. What actually happened in my case is that after a smooth surgery, I had a pleasant three-day hospital stay and an easy recovery with minimal pain. I was off narcotic pain meds by the time I left the hospital. I took ibuprofen regularly the first week, occasionally the second week.
Before surgery, I gave the apartment a good scrub, did lots of laundry, stocked up on groceries (esp. foods requiring little or no preparation) and sprayed sticky windows with silicone lube for easy opening. After surgery, I went for lots of short walks around my neighbourhood, sat out in the sun to read and sew and worked at my computer. I could sit upright at the computer as long as I took breaks whenever my abdominal muscles started to burn a bit. The first week, "breaks" usually meant naps. :-)
My walking range increased gradually. At four weeks I could go for 1-2 hour hikes in a wooded park near my apartment. I was cleared to return to work at a part-time desk job, walk, run, bike, swim and do almost everything except lift 30-40 lb boxes and use a rowing type exercise machine. I was cleared for those at six weeks. Life was pretty much back to normal at eight weeks. I still get a bit of "swelly belly" (swelling in my abdominal muscles) in the evenings, but it's gone by morning and no big deal.
Everyone recovers differently, but that's how my TAH recovery went. :-)

Re: Overwhelmed!!
I agree with "Surprised" I have had 2 gyns advise me to keep my ovaries for the reasons "Surprised" gave and I am 58. So even at my age there are numerous benefits for keeping them. I have had surgeries before, always had major anxiety and when my turn comes in January, I will be once again very anxious. It is sooooo... normal to feel that way. Last surgery, my anesthesiologist gave me a stomach relaxer prior to surgery it helped so much. You don't have to suffer. Much luck.
