I did it!! I told my doctor how I felt
Ladies,
I am so proud of myself. I went for my 2 week checkup today and told my dr. how upset I was about the lack of information that I received prior to my surgery and postoperatively. I told her that I was sent home from the hospital after having a TAH and wasn't given any informational sheet, etc. I told her my husband almost called 911 when I had my first bm because I didn't know it was normal to be in excruciating pain from it. I told her about this website and how informative it was and that she should actually look into it and let all of her patients the opportunity to check this website before and after a hyst. I told her after I had to research on this website to find out what is normal and what is not. She was very open to what I was saying and apologized. I feel so much better!!! : )

Good for you! I am so glad that you spoke up. I am curious as to whether she had any comments about the information you should have received at discharge.

I did it!! I told my doctor how I felt
I told her that I felt abandoned when I left the hospital. When I was in the hospital all the nurses kept saying was how well I was doing and what a good patient I was. I told my dr. it was because I didn't ask for anything and took care of myself. My dr. said the nurses probably assumed that I already knew everything. My dr. told me there are no excuses for sending me on my way without any information. My dr. is told me she is going to look into this and change the way women go home from the hospital. I believe that she geniunely will, she seemed very concerned. I told her this website was a godsend and every woman should have the opportunity to go hystersisters before and after their surgery. I told her that dr.'s should too. It will give them a better idea of what women have concerns about before and after. I told her it could make for better drs. knowing what information their patients need to know.....

Wow! I am so proud of you! You helped alot of people by speaking up. And I am GLAD that you explained why you were such a "good patient". And double "great going!" for telling your dr. about hystersisters. I told my lap dr. about it and he dragged me over to the recpt and asked me to show her the whole site so he could look at it later. When the recpt called me back for my appt , she had already been cruisin HS and said everyone in the office was VERY impressed. So I'm happy that we are speaking up and getting the word out.
Best wishes to you for a speedy recovery.

Good for you! I think sometimes in this day of technology and instant access to things on the internet that people assume we know more than we do. Sometimes if we don't ask questions then it is assumed we know all we should. However, how do we know what questions to ask? I know my Dr gave me info on hysterectomies before my surgery and it was helpful. It also gave me info as to what questions to ask. In the hospital I was also given a list of discharge instructions that I had to go over with the nurse and sign. I just assumed this was standard practice. I guess not! I will also say that my Dr's office actually tells women about this site. I'd actually gotten the site from a couple of friends beforehand, but it was comforting to know that my dr backed this site up as support too. Take care of yourself!

Way to go! That takes courage, and you've probably helped many people who will go to your doctor to not have the same difficulties you did.
Yea you!

Way to go!!
I actually meant to mention to my doc at my 2 1/2 week check about the lack of discharge instructions from the nurse. I had to come home with a cath in and was so overwhelmed from that, and the fact that I was pumped full of drugs, and still reacting from the anesthesia and morphine -- and this nurse just starts going through all of these instructions. No one was in the room to listen in and I tell you -- I didn't remember 1/2 of what she told me. When I got home I looked at the documentation that I got - and NO post op instructions at all.
Never did figure out how they emptied the big overnight cath through the bottom (I had a supra pubic one) so I would take that one off, put the smaller daytime one on, and empty it back through the tube. Thank God I only had it for 2 days before I got it out.
I will write a note to myself so I don't forget to talk to her about it at my 6 week check.

Good for you for speaking up! I plan to do the same at my four month post op.
Although my doctor did discuss risks of the surgery beforehand, my discharge instructions were only about how to take the pain meds; don't drive, and don't lift anything over 10 pounds. No discussion of normal and not normal recovery symptoms, etc. etc. With this being such a common surgery, I don't understand why a patient wouldn't be given a hand-out on the many issues associated with this surgery. Thank goodness for Hyster Sisters!
