Fever pus and drainage

A portion of my incison and around it is smelly, red, rashy, and very wet. Running right at 100.0. Obviously after hours for me to call dr. Do I go to the er or wait til the drs office opens in 11 hours?

Re: Fever pus and drainage

Your incision sounds just like mine when it got infected minus the fever. I waited 12 hours to go to the ER since it was a weekend and my doctor's office was closed. I figured that an early Saturday morning would be less busy than a Friday night. I wouldn't wait more than that though since I was quite surprised at how quickly they took care of me once I told them that I had had a hysterectomy 4 weeks prior. I guess they were worried about a major abscess but luckily, it wasn't that. A round of Keflex healed things up quickly. I would suggest that if your fever goes up, head to the ER tonight otherwise, get seen by your doctor bright and early tomorrow morning.

Thank you. 12 hours seems so far away.

Re: Fever pus and drainage

I hear you. I felt the same way and doubted myself for waiting. The spot on my incision was less than a centimeter but it was getting quite sore. Mine was due to a stitch that was sticking out and that I foolishly tugged on thinking it should have dissolved by then and would pull out easily. It turns out that the sutures my doctor used didn't dissolve for a couple of months.

How big is the spot that is potentially infected?

I ended up coming in. It's maybe 2-3 inches long. They are swabbing it and running a ct scan to make sure there isn't an abcess.

Oh, with that size, I am glad you didn't wait. Hopefully, you don't have an abscess.

Re: Fever pus and drainage

Im dealing with an infection in the belly button incision...I'm 5 wks post op, mine developed about ten days post op...with symptoms like you described. My discomfort even now isn't from my surgery it has been from the infection. I just got clearance to drive yesterday, tried tonight and it was too much for me..will wait a couple more days. At least we are at a point no longer packing it, letting it close on its own now. My Surgeon and my husband have been awesome through all these stages. This recovery has been the longest and most challenging emotionally because of the set back. Sending you well wishes....I just keep thinking by the time this is healed it will be spring and garden season.

Re: Fever pus and drainage

Mine was an abscess and had to be packed and irrigated. My doctor now says to just let it heal. It has been a week and still looks deep and open. I will call to see him tomorrow as instructed, but any idea what he can do if it isn't healing?
