LSH: Had Preop Today

Had my preop this afternoon. Good thing I double checked with surgeon, she had me down as having my cervix removed. I'm a big proponent of not removing things that are working ok.

Had an EKG, blood tests and questions. I don't have to do bowel prep, just eat light. Nurse said to make sure I drank extra fluids the day before. Have to wash with the antibacterial soap.

The one thing that the nurse told me that was really interesting was how to get rid of gas pains. She said to have them lower your head. If you are at home, stick a pillow under your bottom. This causes the gas to move lower in your body (because that is the highest point now) and relieves the pressure on your diaphragm which is what causes the shoulder pain. I figure it's worth a try.

You're super lucky you don't have to do the bowel prep! My doctor didn't recommend the bowel prep but did require an enema. While I was not thrilled about it I will tell you when I didn't go for 5 days after surgery I was really rather glad that she had required it. At least I knew that it was only whatever I had eaten since the surgery that was holding on. LOL

Make sure you do the extra fluids too, it will help make sure that you're not dehydrated when you have to go NPO (nothing by mouth) prior to the surgery. Being dehydrated and getting an IV is horrible

I never heard that trick for gas, I sure hope it works for you!!

I will certainly keep the gas trick in mind...had surgery on my stomach a few years back and, oh, my!...did my shoulder hurt!
