54YO; keep ovaries and cervix/
Still have regular menses at 54 (ripleys believe it or not!) but have bleeding every day due to polyps and fibroids in the uterus. Anemic and very tired of daily bleeding. No fam history of uterine, cerv, or ovarian cancer, so doc suggests taking uterus only. I have a pre-op appt on 11/16 and surg 11/22 so I am researching his recommendation for our pre-op discussion. Should I think about keeping one ovary? Is the data suggesting ovaries help ease into menopause and keep bone and heart health supporting this argument? Annual paps will watch the cervix, there is not much to watch the ovaries in the future but slamming into menopause not so fun, even at my age. I am very physically fit and like the idea of getting back on my feet right away. What other questions should I be asking myself and my doc? Thanks ladies!

Re: 54YO; keep ovaries and cervix/
I'm 49 and had a TAH in mid-july, kept my ovaries, but removed cervix because of cervical polyps. Had a "universe" of fibroids as my dr called my uterus. I had normal period timing, but very very heavy periods and clotting until about 6 months prior to my surgery. At that time I started having horrible periods much too close together, too long, became anemic, etc.
Prior to surgery when we did hormone testing to see where I was in my peri-menopause, my levels came back showing my ovaries were working well and all was in balance. I had been having some menopause symptoms, but nothing unmanageable. Post surgery my ovaries stopped and I turned into a rather sweaty, sleepless, crabby person who wanted to strangle the stupid people around me, and everyone was stupid. Enter vivelle-dot and life became much more tolerable and so did I!
I'm glad I kept my ovaries (I really want the benefits of keeping them) and hope they'll come out of their shock at some point, but am not holding my breath. I mention this because when I asked my Dr about the possibility of my ovaries quitting post surgery, she told me I shouldn't worry about it since the bloodwork showed they were strong. She was actually surprised when my post op bloodwork came back showing very little estrogen. Plenty of women here seem to go through their hyster with ovaries that keep on trucking post surgery and I hope you fall into that group. I was unprepared to go on ERT and had done no research so the whole thing was an unwanted surprise for me. Despite that, I am feeling much better and my surgery was a great decision and something I would do again. Good luck, it sounds like you and your Dr communicate wonderfully and that, to me, is the most important thing. Best wishes for speedy healing!

Re: 54YO; keep ovaries and cervix/
thank you so very much for your reply, I had not heard of ovaries "checking out" for a while or longer, until I started doing some research, so it has gotten my attention and will be a topic for my doc. Our stories (and our uterus'!) are very similar, I am just a bit older than you. I have not contemplated HRT of any kind either and am hoping to avoid it, but will press for some answers. thanks again.

Re: 54YO; keep ovaries and cervix/
I too have a very similar situation. I am 50 years old and my family history of menopause doesn't occur till around 55-57. I was feeling uncertain about keeping the ovaries too! If the doc sees that they are in good condition I am going to keep them. I was unaware of their contribution to our overall health. ie....heart health and combatting osteoperosis. If we don't have a history of ovarian cancer why not try to keep them? Good luck in your surgery! Best wishes and hugs
