Advice on recovery in a colonial house

I live in a colonial and our bedroom is upstairs. Just wondering if it would be a good idea to make my recovery area downstairs.

Has anyone done this and if so what are some of the tips you can offer.

Thanks....

I asked my doctor when she released me from the hospital if I could do steps. She said to try to limit it to once or twice a day the first week. I didn't have much trouble, it was harder coming down. I had my dh help me the first few times. I just held onto the rail and went slowly. After a week it didn't bother me at all and I went up and down many times.

Good luck and ask your doctor what you should do.

I had a TVH and have had no problems with stairs. Just be sure not to go it alone if you're dizzy.

I was given no limits on stairs and I had mine the belly smile way. I did fine, every DR is different, so check with yours.
Best of luck to you and speedy healing.

Advice on recovery in a colonial house

Hi Dcbabe... I also live in a 3-story colonial. I slept on my sofa bed... in the living room when I first came home... but still climbed the stairs to use the bathroom. I live alone and had surgery out of town, so I stayed in a hotel 'til I was 2 weeks post-op. But when I was brought home for a visit at 1 week, I climbed the stairs at least 3 times, with no problem. It all depends on what the doctor says, and how you feel. I still walk up and down very carefully, since there's no one here to help. I read some advice about climbing up backwards... which may be easier if you have some help!

Even if your doctor ok's stairs, that doesn't necessarily mean it won't be extremely painful to go up & down all the time.

I don't know if you are having an abdominal incision or TVH or what. But I think you will be well prepared if you set yourself up a little "suite" downstairs. I personally slept in my recliner for at least a week & I don't have stairs in my house. I do have 3 steps to get into my house. Walking up them backward did ease the pain.

I also had the "dropsies" forever, still am a little clumsy. Get one of those reacher/grabber tools. My dad was kind enough to get one for me when I was about 6 weeks post op & I really wish I had purchased one before surgery.

Really check out this whole site, the articles, etc. You'll get great advice. Here's a link to get you started. Good luck!

Advice on recovery in a colonial house

I had my lavh/bso on Monday. I talked yesterday with my doc about stairs as she released me. She told me once a day up and back down, but not more...but she did say after a couple weeks I could do them more. Do make yourself a place downstairs just in case. I did manage to get up my stairs last night, but hubby had to help me down this morning. YOu do feel some pulling...but I think in the mornings those stomach muscles are more sore from laying all night.

Good luck to you.
