Changing doctors last minute

I'm undoing all the plans and changing doctors, actually changing hospitals altogether.

I realized that I was repeatedly uncomfortable by my Family Dr's lack of solid knowledge of my issues, and her readiness to shove me on to someone else.

Then I remembered that I had seen an Internal Medicine doctor from a different hospital a couple years ago and she was great, knowledgeable, very very thorough, and quick to get me to specialists for things she couldn't handle. At that hospital I saw two specialists and a sub-specialist all in two weeks. Plus, I was able to get an MRI the same day the doctor ordered it! Every single person I saw was wonderful, not one complaint!

So, I canceled the appointment with the unknown GYN surgeon I was referred to, and my Family Dr, and am switching to the other hospital.

I realized that even if this is all "urgent" by my Family Dr's estimation (she wanted me in surgery within 4 weeks, tops), I seem to be OK (or mostly OK if I'm not on my period) and can take some time to do this all right. She wasn't even sending me to a Urologist for my bladder issues!

Anyway, it does mean that I have to start over a little bit. But I can't imagine that will really delay me by a lot considering how fast this new hospital moves.

I'm a little nervous to change things up like this, but I'm also a little relieved at the same time.

Re: Changing doctors last minute

Good for you! It's better to start over with a team you feel comfortable with than to continue where you have concerns. You'll feel much more confident about your decisions this way.

Most of the time 'change' is a good thing! Good luck and God Bless.

Good for you!! Confidence in your docs means the world....

I had a major change as well... dropped my gyn from the surgical team do to a lack of confidence.... so urogyn will be doing all... had to change date as gyn was weeble-like wobbling on the issues and lost date.... and urogyn doesn't want less than A-team so will be postponed till Jan to avoid many end of year vacations

turtleavenger - WAY TO GO!
You are being very proactive in your own health care. You have done the right thing. I used my surgeon ( I am 6 weeks posts op) because she is a good surgeon and I really needed to get it done. She didn't answer most of my questions, in fact didn't like me questioning her, wouldn't give me enough pain medication post op.ect. ect. My biggest tip is make sure you get an antiiflammatory with your pain medication. You will need to get the swelling down and that will reduce your pain. My friend told me that, not the Dr. Best of luck to you and hooray for you following your " gut feelings". Sending you hugs.

It is important to have confidence in your surgeon so I would say if you had doubts preop it was good to change. Good luck in your surgery and during your (hopefully) speedy recovery.

Re: Changing doctors last minute

turtle_avenger,

Like you, I also changed doctors. I was originally scheduled for surgery on July 22nd. I had explained to the DR that I had a feeling that something had "dropped." After reading about similar situations on this website I figured out that I had a cystocele. This DR would not believe it and did not even want to check. He felt that since he had already checked me the month before that it couldn't be. Well, the next gyn not only found that I did indeed have a cystocele, but he sent me to a urologist and a gastroenterologist who he works with to be checked out. He also requested that I see an endocrinologist for some other issues. The good news is that my 2-2.5 graded cystocele will be repaired during the surgery. Also, the endocrinologist found that I had a SEVERE vitamin D deficiency that no one else had found and I am already feeling much better with that taken care of. Add to that I am now getting the daVinci procedure done and he will have another OB/GYN there to assist him. So, yes I am having 3 DRs there for my procedures.

So, the lesson of this story. If you don't feel that the DR is addressing all of your concerns, go to another one. There's plenty of them out there and they didn't all graduate at the top of their class. Add to that that there are so many variables in medicine where each DR can only know so much, your DR might not know everything needed for your particular situation. A good DR will know their limitations and refer you when needed.

Congratulations on taking care of yourself even when the DR did not!!
BEST WISHES and BIG :hugs5:
