1 week pre op
Hi all,my name is Lyndsey,I'm 31 from liverpool UK, I have 2 daughters, Jasmine aged 5 and Imogen aged 3.
I have a stage 3/4 uterine prolapse with a possible bladder prolapse, docs are not sure until they open me up!
I've been told its quite rare for someone my age to have this degree of prolapse but I have hyper motability to do with my muscles so there telling me this could be one of the contributing factors.
I'm due to have a vaginal hysterectomy and pelvic repair aswel as anything else they find on 2/10/13,up until today I was led to believe I was having a general anaesthetic.
I had to attend gynaecology school where I spoke to my anaesthetist and he said he would recommend a spinal anaesthetic and stay awake for the procedure as I won't feel the vaginal packing being removed once I come out of recovery.
He told me if I was to have the general anaesthetic I would only have pain relief and I would be really sore once they remove the vaginal packing.
I am now undecided what route to take, I'm concerned on having the needle in my spine as I've been told it can really hurt, but on the other hand I'm concerned of having the packing removed if I opt for the general!
Is there anyone who can advise me or tell me there experiences who have had a similar procedure?
Thanks in advance
Lyndsey x

Re: 1 week pre op
I had both general anesthetic and an epidural with my TAH BSO. My anesthesiologist recommended that because she could use less anesthetic that way. I would do that again in a heart beat. I only remember part of the epidural going in, because she gave me verseds after the first non-painful portion. The next thing I remember, I was in recovery and they were telling me all was fine.

Re: 1 week pre op
I'm also 31 with two little girls-my uterus & bladder prolapsed in May...for my surgery, I went under with just general anesthesia...they used the da Vinci robot for my hysterectomy so I don't know how different that is from what you're having done...I had my surgery the 22nd of August at 7 in the morning & at 5:30 the next morning they came in & removed my cath & packing....I was sore & it felt weird but it wasn't that bad for me...everyone is different though...don't know if that helps you any but that was my experience... best of luck...
Hugs

Re: 1 week pre op
Thanks for the replys, I'm going to speak to my surgeon and see what he suggests as on my original letter it said I was going to be put asleep.
I feel like such a wimp lol seems the older I get the more afraid I get!
It needs doing though now I'm suffering with my back and have terrible pains down my legs, not to mention nearly impossible to have sex.
Did you have repairs aswel karissa? My surgeon said he may have to switch to abdominal as I have a lot of scar tissue due to eptopics, miscarriages and d and c, he also thinks my bladder will need attention but can't confirm until he operates.
Hugs

Re: 1 week pre op
I had HORRIBLE back & leg pain prior to the surgery! & yes-not much of a sex life before either...my urologist tacked my bladder back up-no sling-just connected it to strong healthy tissue...I do have a urethral sling though because when everything decided to head south in my body, I started experiencing incontinence. I'll be 6 weeks out Thursday & honestly, for me, I feel soooo much better...no pain anymore...I don't waddle...still waiting to get cleared on the sex part so I'm anxious to see how much better that is lol I'm thinking about you...it will get better...just have to be patient...which is easier said than done...I've thrown plenty of 2 year old fits cause I was just ready to feel like me again...
Hugs!!!!

Omg can't believe we have soooo much in common, really glad your feeling better Hun,it's made my day reading this post as I've felt so nervous today, you have really reassured me.
My surgery is scheduled for Wednesday afternoon,so I will update you and keep you informed.
Did you have to give yourself clexane injections to prevent blood clots?
Big hugs and thank you so much
Love

Re: 1 week pre op
I didn't have to take injections-when I went in for the pre-op assessment stuff, they were concerned with the swelling in my belly & ankles...asked if I'd ever thrown a blood clot or had immediate family who had-I hadn't-so nothing else was mentioned...
Do you have much support from family & friends? If I could give you any tips it would be to keep a little basket by the bed-recliner-wherever you settle...I kept my pain meds-stool softeners, tums, nausea meds, gas x all in it...had a couple books & my phone charger close by-cause my phone was my hobby big time during that time...(pinterest lol)Ice packs helped me more than the heating pad...& keep a fan by-i kept my ovaries but they decided they weren't gonna work immediately so I did have night sweats & hot flashes for about two weeks...

Re: 1 week pre op
**sorry it cut me off lol...I got one of those back scratcher thingamajigs too...cause I promise-right when no one is around-your foot will itch & with a sore belly-it was hard to scratch-silly I know but I really did use it a lot...they gave me a belly binder thing at the hospital-it does help with the swelly belly-I tucked my ice packs in there...oh & flushable wipies... they were my best friend cause toilet paper sucked!
As far as the hospital goes-I was super nervous right before surgery...when they came in to get me I started crying...then was asked if I'd been given anything for relaxation... ughm nope...then women started running mad in the hallway saying "you didn't give her anything" "why hasn't she had anything" so yeah-if they'll let you have it-I'd ask for it cause it helped a TON!

Re: 1 week pre op
**I had read a lot of stuff on here before I had my surgery but it was hard finding someone my age with prolapse...prolapse is prolapse I know but it is nice to hear from someone your age & know your you're not the only one...if you can think of anything else I may have left out & u were wondering about-let me know...I honestly don't know what I would have done without this site...I had my hubby & daughters for support-which was great don't get me wrong-but it was really nice having people to talk to on hear that could relate...
Hugs
