Pre-Op Concerns
My surgery date was changed from March 5 to March 1 because of a conflict with my doctor. This alone frightened me. I had made all plans including my kids coming home for the first date. Now I had to readjust, which only gave me 1 week to do that. My youngest daughter wants to me here for the surgery, while my oldest daughter will come once I get home from the hospital. Most of my friends and my sisters have already had this surgery. Everyone says they are glad they had it, but of course everyone was younger than I am now. One of my friends says that the best thing to do once they get you up after the surgery to walk, is to continue to walk, which reduces the gas, and of course watch what you eat. The doctor says if everything goes well at the 2-week checkup, I should be ready to drive again. I will keep you informed as to my progress. The surgery is about 24 hrs. away. I'm beginning to get nervous now. Keep me in your prayers.

Hello ModernGirl
You didn't say how old you were so I am not sure about where you are, but I am 51 and I had the surgery 8 months ago and I did so good I can't imagine why I didn't have it done sooner. I have a 20 year old Son and he of course came home from college, he was out for the summer, and stayed with me for the first 4 weeks during the day. I wasn't alowed to drive until 4 weeks, DR orders. You will be fine 4 days is not going to make that much difference in how your surgery will turn out it just makes you sooner going into recovery . I know it is hard to change plans that your children have made to be there, but I am sure it will work out. You sound like you are ready so let me tell you being nervous is perfectly normal. We all were scared before the surgery. I don't think you can have this surgery without being scared. God Bless and please update us on your progress when you can.

Pre-Op Concerns
Moderngirl, hang in there! Changing dates is scary, but look at it this way, you'll have 4 fewer sleepless nights! And you'll be a princess 4 days sooner.
I'm sure it will all go well. I'd be nervous too, 24 hours from surgery. I'm nervous enough 2 weeks away. It will all be over soon. Just remember to breathe. When I take slow, deep belly breaths when I'm nervous, it can make all the difference.
Good luck!

Pre-Op Concerns
Hi Moderngirl
Welcome to Hystersisters!!
I had my hyst 6 months ago when I was 55. I notice your profile says that you're retired, so you may be a few years older than I, or just fortunate enough to be able to take early retirement
I'm glad that I finally had it done, too.
Your friend has given you some great advice. You also need to drink lots of fluids and rest as much as possible. There are also drop down menus on the main screen with lots of helpful information for both pre-op and post-op needs.
You'll be in our prayers tomorrow. Please let us know how you're doing after you're back home a few days.

I know it must have been disruptive to have your date changed, at least it was moved sooner than later! I would have had my surgery the day after I found out I needed a hyst so I would not have to think about it...such a wimp I am! I am 53 and believe me it is the best thing I have done for myself in a long time. I am 5 weeks post op and feeling really good, still some twinges. I know that everything will go well and you will be ready to visit us on the post side soon. Take care.

Scared
My surgery date is set for March 8, and I am scared. I guess it is fear of the unknown. I wish I could just get it over with because the waiting and not knowing what to expect is making me more anxious. The nurse said they would send me some information in the mail. So I am waiting for that. My doctor tried to explain things to me but I was numb. All I could think of while he was talking was my mom had a hyster at 38, my grandmother at 39 and now me at 44. Did I do something wrong? I have been in pain for so long that maybe I should just live with the pain. But then I think my quality of life has gone down hill lately. I am sorry I am taking so long? I guess I just need to talk to someone who is going through the same thing. I feel so alone.

Pre-Op Concerns
JMarie44, looks like you go in a few days before I do.
My mom also had a hyst around my age and I had this weird thought, wondering if somehow I think I should because she did. But I realized that no, I want one because of *pain*, not so I can be my mom's twin.
I too have wondered if I should just live with the pain -- for me, it likely would stop at menopause (unless my intestinal troubles are due to endo, which I'll find out during my hyst). What I've finally realized is that only I get to decide what is acceptable in my life. It's not that the pain is unendurable; I don't pass out from it. But I do have to hide in my house attached to a heating pad and scarfing pain meds, which mean I can't go anywhere, and I'm taking drugs that aren't particularly good for my stomach or my liver. And even then, the pain is just lessened, not erased.
You don't deserve to live in pain. Nobody does. We're lucky because there's something we can do about our pain; we can live without our uteruses/ovaries/tubes. We have the right to make that choice.
For me, deciding to have a hyst is an act of power -- it's me taking charge of my own health. It's a very brave thing to do, 'cuz I'm chicken about needles and hospitals, and especially surgery. So you are doing something brave and powerful to make your life better. That's a wonderful gift to give yourself.
Hope that helps. Hang in there. You're not alone.
Melissa
