Dont trust my feelings...
Hi all.... It's X-Mas eve, I hope everyone is well... I had a RALH on last Thurs. (18 Dec). Today has been my best day so far, allthough I know I hafta be careful NOT to over do it.. I have a few questions I hope some of you more experienced sisters can help with. First is: My uterus & cervix were removed, is that considered a TOTAL hysterectomy ? since he left my ovaries ? (The Dr. said they are working at about 50%, and put me on Bioidentical hormones 1 month ago) Since they are still there, will they eventually hafta be removed ?
What is the amount of time that a post-op apt should be scheduled for ? Mine is 19 days afterwards (because of x-mas & New Years). What all happens at that apt ? Does he do an exam ?
I seem to be very happy one moment then pretty depressed the next, I am on hormones or is that an entirely a diffrent matter ?
When might I expect to return to work ? (I am a pizza shop General Manager)
My body seems to be reacting very diffrently to things than it did before, am I being a "Worry-wart" or should my medical questions be LISTENED to by the Dr. and NOT just brushed off to a staff member ?
Thanx for everyone here !!! Your GREAT !

Okay, in order:
1.) Yes, if your uterus and cervix were removed, that is a total hysterectomy.
2.) Your ovaries shouldn't need to be removed unless you develop problems with them later on.
3.) I think post-op is usually 4-6 weeks? I'm assuming it should involve an exam. I haven't had my official post-op yet.
4.)you'll need to ask other sisters about this. It sounds like it could be hormonal but I'm no expert.
5. ) It depends on your body heals and what type of hysterectomy you had. 4-6 weeks is a good estimate.
6.)Well, yes, ideally I think they should take your medical questions seriously.

some additional info
#3 - I had a Da Vinci total and Dr. wanted to see me initially 2 to 3 weeks after surgery. I went for 3.5. He'll see me again at just under 6. He did not do an internal exam at the first appt but some doctors do I think it's all up to the doctor. Since your appt is farther out he will probably do an internal exam.
#4 - could be hormonal, even though you kept your ovaries they could be asleep and not producing hormones at this time. It also could be partially getting the anesthesia and everything out of your system. You'll have to give this one some time and talk to the Dr. about it.
#5 - some people are released after 2 weeks w/ da Vinci so you could be released for work after your January appt. I am taking the 6 weeks. I would expect 4 to 6 weeks just to be on the safe side.
#6 - your body will react differently especially because of the surgery (trauma of it even though not as invasive as a TAH and also getting the meds like the anesthesia out of your system) and if your ovaries are "asleep" if you aren't getting enough hormones. Dr. may listen to you but tell you that this is "normal" I had several of those "this isn't normal for me things" that they said were generally normal for hysterectomy patients. If you think it's not right listen to your body and ask. You only get this chance to recover from this surgery.

2- No reason to remove the ovaries unless you develop problems with them later on.
3-My doc. wants to see me 10 days after surgery and then again, I think, 4 or 6 weeks, not sure. Some people on here have said 2 weeks to 3 weeks after.
4-I've heard of temporary ovary shut down that can last up to a month after surgery. It might just be your emotional. I was very emotional before and after. I loved the post that the lady (forgot who it is) said her husband took her out to dinner 2 weeks post op and she cried at how beautiful the dinner rolls were, in front of the waiter! lol
5- Just do as little as possible. I heard most people say driving within 2 to 4 weeks, dependign on doctor's instructions. While you are healing scar tissue is developing. When overdoing, that tissue can adhere to other organs, etc. Then pain can come later.
6-I guess, it depends. In the perfect world, we'd never have to talk to the nurses to get to the doctors. They usually have to fend off most questions, unless it's a big problem and then they get you in. Not the way it should be I guess.
