my worst bad period
Yikes, I have to tell my story.
I've only shared this with my sister-in-law. I can't believe that there is a place where women can talk about this stuff.
Last October (2003) I went to Bs. Aires to be with my best friend, who has brain cancer. I tried to time the trip so that I would not be having my period when traveling (although having it there was no fun either). I was on day 9 of my period coming home, a trip that is a 24-hour door-to-door travel ordeal. But heck, day 9 usually isn't too bad. I typically had a 10-12 day period with days 2 and 3 or 4 being the clotting, stand-in-the-shower-for-3-hours and don't-leave-the-house days. About 4 hours into the first flight (9 hours from Bs. Aires to Miami) I felt the clots coming. I jumped up to rush into the restroom -- and of course the seatbelt sign went on. I rushed in anyway and locked the door. The flight attendants pounded on the door and screamed at me for 15 minutes then finally they left me alone. But I was covered with blood, my underwear and pants were soaked. Since it was day 9 I hadn't expected this (geez, I had bled like crazy already for 9 days!) and I was unprepared with fresh clothes. Of course I had the super tampons and pads...I never went anywhere without them. But what to do about the blood soaking thru my pants? Well, heck, I couldn't do anything. I just stayed in the restroom patting them dry with paper towels. Then I went back to my seat, which of course, was ALSO covered with blood. Yuck. What could I do? The plane was completely full. I sat down in that seat for the next 5 hours totally miserable. This all happened in the middle of the night since the flight leaves at 10:30pm Bs. Aires time and arrives in Miami 5am ET. I got off the plane in Miami, went thru customs, sent my luggage off to my next flight, and then waited 3 hours for my final plane flight. At 8am I caught my 5 hour flight from Miami to SF. So I'm walking around Miami airport in pants that are covered with dried blood. I felt totally gross but I didn't know what to do. I couldn't get into my luggage since we just shoved it from customs to the next flight, and no place was open at that hour where I could buy anything else to wear. At least the pants were black so they hid the blood.
One of my best friends picked me up at the airport. I was so embarrassed that I couldn't tell her anything (she is already thru menopause and never had any problems like this). I just told her I needed to sit on a towel (I sure didn't want to get blood all over her nice car).
When I came home and washed out my pants they were as bloody as if I had been an axe murderer.
I've always felt horrible about this incident...the poor person who sat in my seat after me (and all the rest of them after that)! I would never have believed something like this could have happened in a public place. It makes me wonder now everytime I sit down in a dark, uphostered seat in a plane, restaurant, movie theatre, etc.
Hope this wasn't too gross. It was so traumatic though...I feel better just being able to post this in a forum where other women will understand. None of my good friends or close relatives had a bleeding problem like this except my sister-in-law, and she's already thru menopause despite being 3 1/2 years younger than me.

Unbelievably heavy period
my last two months prior to surgery aunt flo came and stayed! I got to the point of wearing depends just so I could go to the grocery store. It was terrible. My little boy(6) witnessed my first hemorrage..I stood up out of the car after picking him and his sister up from school and the flood gates opend..God we all got scared that day. It took days before he would come near me..he was afraid of the scarey blood. That's when I started wearing depends...had my mom pick them up for me and give me a ride to the ER. I couldn't work or do much of anything..just bleed. I am so happy those days are gone forever. Best of luck to you on Tuesday.

I also sympathize with you. I was teaching a class of 3rd graders. I had just changed both a super tampon and maxi pad. Within 20 minutes, I had a major flood all over me and the chair I just sat down in. Talk about embarassing. I had to find another teacher to cover for me while I cleaned up the mess, and figure out how to explain it to the kids who asked. I also had to go home because the bleeding wouldn't slow down. I'm very glad this is almost over!

Unbelievably heavy period
Well, as long as everyone's sharing their stories, I'll tell one of mine.
About 12 years ago I suffered from heavy bleeding as a result of a small polyp. I remember one afternoon, during my period, I was in the shower, and my phone rang. I had just moved and hadn't yet set up my voice mail, so I ran out of the shower to answer the phone. I was standing naked over a pair of shoes in my bedroom when I had the phone conversation. I kind of had one leg stretched in front of the other, right over my shoes. When I finished talking and hung up, I finished my shower, dried off, got dressed, etc. Then I went to put on my shoes, and found one shoe just full of blood . . .
YUCK! I had stood there talking on the phone for maybe two minutes and ruined a shoe! I was so grossed out, but also fortunate that something like this hadn't happened in public.
Ladies, there is light at the end of the tunnel!
Best of luck to everyone going to the castle this week, and Kate, don't worry about a thing. Soon this will all be behind you.

Unbelievably heavy period
Kate, maybe this story will cheer you up. It's actually pretty funny, and it took place in the High Point Library!
About two years ago my doctor suggested I try a different birth control pill, to alleviate my bad cramping symptoms. But I found after my first period with these pills, that I was bleeding like crazy and much longer than usual! In fact, I had been bleeding for 9 or 10 days when I decided I'd better call my doctor.
Some of you might have seen my posts where I've talked about how wonderful my doctor is about calling me back, himself. Well, this day was no different -- only that day I'd forwarded my home phone to my cell phone, and when my doctor called back, I was in the LIBRARY!
My cell phone rang and so I ducked into the nearest bathroom, and talked to my doctor, and got his advice and reassurance, and we formulated a game plan to get me better. Then I walked out all cool and collected -- until I passed another bathroom and heard a woman talking in it, and realized you could easily hear every word anyone was saying in any of the bathrooms!
Talk about embarrassed! That whole section of the library heard a bunch of intimate details that day that they probably could have done without!

I can relate
I am a pre-k teacher who squats all day and sits in little bitty chairs. Try explaining to a group of 20 4-5 year olds why "Mrs. Kelly" is suddenly bleeding all over the place. No matter how many super tampons and pads I put in/on, getting up from one squat was a doozie. Especially the flow that comes with the big clots. I'm off to the castle Wednesday morning June 2nd. I think "Aunt Flo" wanted one last chance at making my life miserable. All of the teachers at my school rented a Hotard bus and took a trip to one of the casino's. After soaking through the 5 pads I had with me, I finally had to stack folded paper towels into my underwear for the bus ride home. Horror of horrors, when we got back to school and the bus driver turned the lights on in the bus, my pants were SOAKED! Everybody freaked and thought I was hemhorraging or something. I'm sure it was on the bus seat, but the pattern on the fabric was colored in dark reds and blacks so we really couldn't tell. I had to get a plastic trash bag out of my trunk(it's unbelievable what we carry for such accidents) to put on my car seat for the ride home. Another pair of pants and underwear in the trash........sigh. Oh well...only 3 days left and then NO MORE BLOOD! Woooohooooo!!
