I'm curious...what exactly is everyone afraid of?
My biggest fear is death...I'm afraid I'm going to die. I'm not afraid of the pain, or recovery, or anything else. Just death. What about you? What exactly makes you nervous? Anyone else afraid to die?!

I'm curious...what exactly is everyone afraid of?
I am a big baby when it comes to pain, and the pain I have been in has been hard to deal with. I have had two c-sections, but am really scared the pain will be 10 times worse.

I'm curious...what exactly is everyone afraid of?
My surgery was three weeks ago. My big fear pre op. was that they would open me up and find cancer everywhere. They didn't and I'm fine! I nursed my mom through cancer when she was 44 yrs. and she died at 46 yrs. I'm going on 42 so to me the fear made sense.

I'm curious...what exactly is everyone afraid of?
I recently had my gall bladder removed, the first time I've ever been under general anesthesia. I was literally terrified, just shaking beforehand, that I would wake up during surgery (and not be able to let anyone know that I was awake). That fear was completely put to rest. My anesthesiologist was great - told me it was "margarita time" and the next thing I remember was waking up in recovery room.
My fear for this surgery (TAH) is that I'll wake up and still have this horrendous pain in my side!!! :confuse: However, as I have been reminded by the wonderful women on this site, I am trying to focus on the positive and believe that I'm on my way to a pain-free life!

I'm curious...what exactly is everyone afraid of?
my biggest fear was death. followed by the fear of menopause and not feeling well...my personality changing because of hormone imbalances. i also thought a lot about whether or not he'd find cancer..even though there was no suspicion of that beforehand. everything went fine, i'm alive, and my ovaries are working great.

This may sound stupid - but to be perfectly honest, I was afraid that after they knocked me out, they would drop me on the floor. Funny now that I think back on it.
Best wishes to you all!!

I'm curious...what exactly is everyone afraid of?
I was so afraid that I was crying in the operating room. I hate anything that causes me to lose control. I won't even drink alcohol because I don't like the way it makes me feel. I was afraid of everything - not waking up, waking up and having pain or serious complications. The doctors and anesthesiologist were very caring and gentle. They talked to me about the possibility of pain after and what they would do to control it. They also talked to me about nausea and vomiting afterward and what they would do for that. Once I was in my room, the only time I had pain was if I tried to move and I did have dry heaves and nausea. I don't think I would be as afraid if I had another surgery. I do think that some fear is normal. Just remember - it'll be okay. We are all here for each other - thank goodness!!

I'm really scared too and that is not my normal reaction--in fact, it is really out of character and surprising my husband and children (ages 17-21)and me too. I'm scared: 1) Of not ever feeling like myself again. I know that the majority of women feel better after having the surgery, but there is a small number who feel worse or have complications. 2) That last time I had surgery (tubal ligation), when I was in recovery and coming out of the effects of the anesthesia, I felt like I was suffocating. I still couldn't move or talk to tell someone and it was terrifying. 3) I'm a big believer in positive thinking and rarely use traditional medications. We do homeopathy and acupuncture, etc. During childbirth I used no painkillers. I'm scared I will not be able to handle the pain.

You know that old saying, "There is nothing to fear but fear itself." For me I hate the fear of the unknown.
I'm OK with the medical stuff since I've had a lot of experience and hospitalizations and I'm still standing, but I worry more about how I'm going to manage afterward with little to no help and a house full of rambunctious boys. I'd say it's more worry than fear.
