Making The Hysterectomy Decision
I actually asked my doctor to start talking to my insurance company about a hysterectomy, but now I am worried that the solution is too drastic.
I've always had heavy, irregular periods. When I was younger, they were usually from 40 days to 3 months apart. They told me not to worry, so I didn't.
About 4 years ago I started bleeding very heavily on day 5, with large (thumb-sized) clots. The doctor have me hormones to stop the bleeding, did a sonogram, and an endometrial biopsy. The sonogram showed an enlarged Fallopian tube which went back to normal size in a few months. The bleeding was blamed on a low thyroid.
I've been mostly anemic since that time. I'm 51 years old with regular, rather heavy periods. I do not have cramping, but I do get monthly headaches. I can handle the periods. I'm used to it. I went in recently and was told that I need to do something about the bleeding, so I agreed to an ablation. The did a sonogram and then a biopsy because my endometrial stripe was 15.7. There was no cancer. They said that I'm still ovulating. The sonogram also showed 6 fibroids, the largest about the size of a grapefruit. My uterus is the size of a 14 week pregnancy, so I'm not a candidate for ablation. I bled for 9 days from the biopsy and have been cramping since I had the procedure. I don't want to go in every 3 months and get more biopsies. I also don't want major surgery. I don't want my sexual function diminished. The doctor says it will cure my headaches and cramps. I don't see how it will cure my headaches and I didn't have cramps before he messed with me.
Any advice is desired.

Making The Hysterectomy Decision
Talk to an interventional radiologist about UFE. I had it at 51 for a 9 cm monster. It worked wonders for me.
I am now 53 and doing very well. I am thrilled to have kept my utetus and even though my bleeding symptoms were immediately resolved and my bulk symptoms were gradually resolved doctors still want to perform hysterectomy based on my age alone.
Some are very aggressive too. I finally found a high rated doctor with 21 years experience who said I DON'T need a hysterectomy. It is so frustrating.
Look into UFE. It is wonderful for women our age and orgasms are much better with the fibroid out of the way.

Re: Making The Hysterectomy Decision
Absolutely agree with Sisterduke. I also didn't buy into the mantra that my uterus is a throwaway.
Did UFE about 8 months ago. My periods are super light and sex is great again.
My doctors including my GYN were very supportive and respectful of my wishes to not have a hysterectomy. In fact it was my GYN who pushed me in that direction. My surgeon was the one who set my appt up with the radiologist.
I had three submucosal fibroids and they were removed by myomectomy after UFE. They were between 12-15 cm in size.
Best wishes to you as you try to make a decision.

Re: Making The Hysterectomy Decision
I agree with Sister Duke. Talk to a highly experienced Interventional Radiologist about the possibility of UFE. I did it in 2007 when I was 50 and I had 2 large grapefruit sized fibroids and "innumerable others". It helped me a lot and I was so glad I did it. However, in the past year and a half I started having really bad pain and pressure from the fibroids and decided to have a hysterectomy in January. It was a hard decision and I really didn't want major surgery but I also didn't want to keep living with the pain and compromising my quality of life. I'm very glad I had UFE...it was minimally invasive and it got me through menopause. I thought the fibroids would shrink even more after menopause but I'm in the minority of women who had gradual growth again. I'm very happy I had the hysterectomy too and am feeling great. So I always say explore the least invasive option first. Good luck.
