Food...before and after...Which is best???
hi,
I'm starting to make my list of food and stuff I need before and after, I did a search on food and ended up with 66 pages!!!! My computer is old and slow, takes forever to load and I went thru about 8 pages with great ideas but any more suggestions would be wonderful.
I'll be having a LAHV unless the dr. can't then it's a TAH. She is 99% positive that it will be LAHV.
What do they mean by no solid food before......what is alright to drink. Terrified of the gas problems so I really want to this right.
I was told to drink magnesium citrate (2 bottles) before and have already added tucks or baby wipes to my list. I drink lots of water anyways and no soda, what else should I drink before surgery?
My list for afterwards is:
apricots - dried
cranberry juice
crackers
peppermint tea
lemon juice
soup - which are best????
jello
applesauce
canned fruit
motrim
stool softener
frozen foods - which are better????
oatmeal
Also what kinds of foods are considered bland? I would like to prepare as best as possible and eat what is good for me, I have hardly any dislikes, except cooked cabbage which I heard was a huge no-no.
Any suggestions or what worked or didn't work would be very appreciated.
Beth

Food...before and after...Which is best???
Hi Beth, it sounds to me like you're a pretty together person . I think that the after foods should be what you like best from your list. Soup is one of my favorite foods ( just about any, except clam chowder- yuck). I would stick to the blander ones (that means no really spicy or fatty ones). I ate a lot of what you listed and added pudding, popcicles, sherbet, cottage cheese (helped settle my tummy), mashed potatoes, and lots of fruit juices.
Along with the cabbage, I avoided beans, broccoli, cucumbers, eggs and soy products.
For before try to stick to juices and such that have some nutrition.
Also, check with your dr about the motrim or any other med before you take it.
Best wishes.

Food...before and after...Which is best???
((((((((Beth))))))))))))),
Gas X should be on your list also. Most need it.
by 1 week post I was eating my regular foods again. Just eat what your tummy can take. I did eat less though, not much of an appetite for a couple weeks.
Best wishes,

Food...before and after...Which is best???
Hi Beth
One other item I would recommend is some bottled water. I drank a lot of water afterwards and it helped with the constipation. I, too, enjoyed bland soup and some very lightly seasoned chicken that I had cooked before and put in little baggies in the freezer. I just put one in the microwave and thawed it out when I wanted something a little more filling.
Hope this helps. Sounds like you've got a great list going!!
Sending you a big
Patty

Food...before and after...Which is best???
Hi Beth,
Great list and ideas already. Wheat Thins are great when the plain old cracker isn't quite enough...they help with the fiber too. But one very important item that I forgot and dh went out to stock me up on...chocolate!!! We all tend to think of the healthy things and forget our little treats ...I craved anything chocolate and even Ice Cream or sherbet. Maybe it's a hormone thing but it sure made me feel better, almost like a therapy. It wasn't something that I had to eat (like to help with tummy trouble or to get rid of gas) I indulged. Also, not to eat, but a good smelling body lotion works wonders to lift your spirits...the raspberry stuff smells good enough to eat!
Best of luck to you with everything.

Food...before and after...Which is best???
My post-op rule of thumb for food is to concentrate on eating foods that absorb water while cooking (rice, potatoes, etc) instead of things that get drier while cooking (bread, crackers, etc). The idea is you'll be eating your water in addition to drinking it.
Eat very little meat and cheese at first as it can be hard to digest. Stick to small servings. Anything greasy just gave me heartburn.
While garlic is a wonderful, natural antibiotic, hubby insisted I stay away from eating too much garlic or onions pre-op because the odor would be coming out of my pores and he said the staff shouldn't have to deal with that.
Fiber and soy is good but if you're not used to it, it can cause horrible gas problems. If you eat these, use very small portions.
As for chocolate, I try to avoid my favorite foods if I'm nausceous. I save those things for when I'm feeling GOOD.
I didn't eat a lot of frozen foods because I found it difficult to dig around in the freezer - too hard on the tummy. This included ice cream. Trying to take a scoop of hard ice cream out of the container is almost impossible when you can't use your stomach muscles.
Hubby and I are big coffee drinkers. Good quality, caffeinated coffee is well known for it's anti-constipating effect. I have actually cut down on the amount of caffeine since my surgery but still find that a cup of coffee in the morning helps.
Make sure you're getting lots of vitamin C to help tissue healing: strawberries, oranges, pineapple juice, etc. Cherries are anti-constipating and in season. Watermelon is high in water. The downside is both cherries and watermelon will spike blood sugar so diabetics need to watch out.
As for drugs, add acteminophen (Tylenol) to your list. It's nice to have an alternative painkiller.
In short, eat what you normally eat but be smart about it.

Food...before and after...Which is best???
Hi Beth,
I guess my post didn't make sense. I just meant to be ready for your taste buds to throw you a curve every now and then after you get home. I don't think if you're sick to your stomach you'll feel like chocolate anyway. And I didn't mean for you to get up and scoop hard ice cream yourself...I would never want anyone to hurt themselves. After all you'll be a Princess and you should be pampered!. Sorry if my post misled you in any way. I just meant that this is hard enough at times to deal with ...all the restrictions,boredom,gas,etc... you have to enjoy the little splurges and for me it was chocolate!!!
Best of luck.
