TAH - anxious to start working out again

I had my TAH on December 6th, I feel my recovery had been pretty smooth ( except yesterday, I went to the mall and carried a little too much, feeling sore today).
I am very anxious to start working my abs, my lower tummy is still tender. I will not be doing anything until I get clearance from the Dr, will be going to see him on December 5th. He did tell me to take things slow, but did not restrict me altogether....
I walked a mile last week, which made me happy.
Who is in the same boat as me?

TAH - anxious to start working out again

Yep, we are in the same boat! I am use to swimming laps every morning & lifting weights & working abs. Everyone heals differently and I am only 1 week post op. I had a LSH on the 13th. My doc said that I could sit in the hot tub so that is what I have been doing for the last 3 days while my husband swims laps. I am cleared to start swimming again after week 3 but I know I will have to start out with 'water walking' for a while to work my way back up. My Dr. Also said that I can start lifting weights & working abs after 6 weeks. I plan on taking that really slowly also. I'll probably drop down to using the lightest weights possible & doing gentel ab workouts instead of using the incline bench with weights. I'll increase as my body allows. I DO NOT want to hurt my insides but I also want to keep my body as healthy as possible.

I'm glad to know I'm not the only one who's ready to get back in shape

Re: TAH - anxious to start working out again

I had my TAH on Aug 3 and I wouldn't dare try to do any ab work yet. I'm still sore and swollen. It still hurts for me to lay back on my weight bench also.

I've been taking things slow also. Was cleared at 6 weeks to resume all activities. I've been working out & doing small things. I still haven't pushed the vacuum yet. I can feel the downward pressure/heaviness inside when I push the buggy at the grocery store. I'm swollen by the time I get home from shopping.

I know everyone heals at different rates but please take it easy and don't be in such a rush to exercise. Hell, I've been an avid weight lifter for over 7 years and I'm definitely not up to doing even close to what I was before my surgery.

Let me tell you this. I started spotting two weeks ago, out of the blue. I have a desk job and went to the bathroom at around 4:20 and I had dark discharge in my panties. I nearly freaked out. I called the doc & the nurse said it was normal. I don't believe her and I will be going to the doc after the holidays just to be on the safe side. I only had discolored discharge for the first 3 weeks after my surgery and have had nothing since. I haven't even had sex yet so I can't blame it on that. I haven't been able to pin point the exact cause but I think it was a combination of things. Since I've been feeling better, I've been doing more around the house, working out, etc. I've gotten my energy back, feeling good and actually I seem to feel better than I did before surgery. Sooo now, boom ! A set back has occurred at this late date in my recovery.

So, my little scare has scared the crap out of me and will not & have not been doing anything for the last 3 weeks.

Remember, you've have major surgery and it will take roughly 6-12 months to fully heal internally. You might feel fine but your insides are still healing and will be for a long time.

Re: TAH - anxious to start working out again

SAH Dec.12th. My Dr said I can walk as much as I want. I can begin other basic exercise at week 3. Ab work at week 6. One of the personal trainers at work is great to work with afte abdominal surgery. She had a c-section. She recommended starting with planks and hip raises, and waiting awhile before starting back up with "traditional" crunch type exercises. I am planning to get a couple of sessions with her when I get back to it. Looking forward to getting back in the pool as soon as I am cleared.

Re: TAH - anxious to start working out again

I had LAVH which ended up with horizontal incision as well due to bleeding during surgery. Supposedly my horizontal incision is slightly smaller than a normal TAH, so what I have done may not be totally appropriate to you.
I gradually built up my walking so that by 6 weeks I was back to a normal 8 km with hills. I based increasing distance on how my insides felt. When I could not walk far, I did little and often.
I was very careful not to lift or carry anything and movements like twisting.
I found a physio sheet - I think it was from Devon area health - online with some basic post-op exercises for hysterectomy and did them.
At 6 week check, I was given the all clear to start training, but gradually.
At 8 weeks, I am now back to swimming 1km
