Upcoming hysterectomy - June 26 - scared of being in pain again

Hi, this is my first post. I just received confirmation of my surgery date - June 26 - and I am just terrified. Recently moved far from family and friends and also just recovered from a back injury. Really scared of being in pain again....any words of wisdom? Thanks

Hi Fleur028 to HysterSisters!

Your feelings and emotions are very normal. This is one tough surgery to digest and process.

Pain is different for everyone post-op. When you wake up from surgery, they will ask you how much pain you are in, and then they will give you pain meds to match. The pain is usually controllable, and they will continue to monitor it while you are in the hospital. They will also give you a prescription to go home with. You will probably be on narcotics or similar for a few days, maybe longer, and also Motrin. After a bit, usually Motrin is all that is needed.

Recovery from this surgery will take some time - think weeks and not days. You will also need to take time off work - how long depends on how fast you recover and your work duties. Again, think weeks and not days. Can someone come in from your family and help some? Are you a member of a church? Do you know a co-worker or neighbor that can help out, or check in on you? You will probably need some help out with cooking, cleaning, dishes, laundry, shopping, driving, etc.

You may want to look at our pre-op page and our post-op page. You may also want to click on the HYSTERECTOMY CHECKPOINTS near the top of the page. These will give you information on your surgery.

But know that you are not alone - never on this site! We are here to help and support you. I know this is such an overwhelming experience. Ask what questions you might have, and we will try to answer them. Also post your feelings and emotions. It really does help.
