5 days post op

My vaginal hysterectomy was Fri May 4th, went in and all went well. In the recovery room within a few hours my vitals started to decline. My sister and mother were in the room with me and very concerned as to what was happening, come to find out a artery close to my ovary had tore. My blood pressure was dropping and my nurse didn't seem too concerned? After a few hours of low blood pressure and I wasn't feeling well, felt like I was going to pass out and vomiting my sister demanded that the nurse call my dr. My sister saved my life....I was bleeding internally and I was bleeding for a long time. My dr came right away and did a ultrasound on my stomach and found the blood and rushed me back to the OR, my dr informed me that she would need to cut my stomach and all I could say was ok. She repaired the tear and after 3 blood transfusions and now my 5th day in the hospital I am recovering. I have to take it one day at a time, I got very emotional yesterday because what happened just hit me all at once, I had been telling my friends and family what happened with no pproblem, but once I was alone the emotions came flooding in.
The cut on my stomach is not so bad, only have pain on the right side, everyday is getting better. I hope to go home soon, but I want to make sure I can make it around the house alone.
My advice to everyone and the family that is with the patient after surgery is pay attention to how the patient is reacting after surgery, it's very important, you can save their lives. I thank God for my mom & sister being here with me.

Re: 5 days post op

Mrs. Brigget, I'm so sorry you went through that. Big hugs and may you get lots of tender care from those great relatives of yours!

I'm so glad your sister had the nerve to advocate for you in the face of indifference.

I heard horror stories from a friend and even my general practitioner about the post-op care his wife received in one local hospital, the one my insurance would pay 90% for. I paid extra money to avoid it by going elsewhere and had my hubby who is a nurse practitioner with me for the whole day of surgery and the next day too.

The advice I read on one thread here pre-op was having an advocate stay with you for at least 24 hours after surgery. You did and it saved your life!! Congratulations and of course you'll have a lot of emotions about that experience. {{{Mrs. Brigget}}}
