Bowel prep before surgery or a liquid diet? What should I do?
Hello!
I'm scheduled for an LAVH on 05/01/15 at 8am. My doctor has said I don't need to do a bowel prep but should be on a liquid diet for two days prior. She didn't exactly specify what that means, though.
I found some pre-op instructions online that seem much simpler/more specific. Is it wise to do that instead or am I crazy for considering it?
I'm rather nervous about this whole thing and have been having crazy dreams as a result. I'm sure my bowels are the least of my concern but for some reason it's what I'm focusing on.

I would get the info specifically from your dr or the hospital. Ask for a list of acceptable items to include in your liquid diet. Mine for example was any clear liquids. Pops, black tea or coffee, maybe apple juice, clear broths, popcicles (not the juice kind, just the clear colored ones) jello, water of course.

Hi Yellowbird73 to HysterSisters!
I am so glad you found this site. Your fears, emotions, nerves, and anxiety are all very normal. This is a difficult surgery to face. Having weird dreams, or even nightmares, are normal as well - it is just your nerves surfacing when you sleep.
First off, do NOT do a bowel prep as your doctor told you not to. This is very important. You should only do a bowel prep if your doctor specifically wants you to do one.
Regarding liquid diet, you need to get specific instructions from your doctor regarding the items they include - just ask they will usually give you a list. For me, I was on a clear liquid diet starting at noon the day before my surgery. My options were clear chicken broth, clear juices (e.g., white grape juice) , water, black coffee or black tea, soda crackers, jello (no fruit in the jello). Things to avoid were dairy products, pulpy juices, tomato juice, solid foods like meat, cheese, etc.

One thing you need to check with your doc is, did she mean a *liquid* diet or a *clear liquid* diet? A clear liquid diet is much more restrictive. Since you're supposed to be on it for two days, you'd better find this out.
If your doc didn't say bowel prep, *don't do bowel prep*. Mine just told me clear liquids only after 5 PM, nothing to eat or drink after midnight. No bowel prep was mentioned. When I arrived at the hospital the next day, there was a nurse waiting for me with a Fleet enema. If I'd had the Fleet enema on top of bowel prep, I'd've been dehydrated.

It would be best to call your doctor for specific instructions. I had to call mine for clarification. Mine was detailed to try to prevent post op sickness.
