Sex question 5 2/3 weeks post-op

Okay ...so recovery has gone well, my incision did well, etc. And I can't believe I am feeling some libido at this point. BUT... i know the doc had said 6 weeks (and prior to surgery, he thought possibly even 8 weeks if it didn't go as well as it did).......it'll be 6 wks on Monday and I see doc on Wednesday for the 6 wk appt.

I know the concern is infection, i understand that...from ANYthing going into the vagina. But is that mainly if you had your cervix out and any surgical procedures IN the vagina? I had SAH/BO, open abdominal w/ a hernia repair (on July 27) and so far my HRT is working ( i know that could change).......... i kept my cervix (hope i don't regret that) and didn't have anything done in the vagina. Will the doc still have to do a pelvic exam and check anything inside on next Wed??? Or could I assume it is okay to ease into intercourse this weekend???? Is orgasm safe? (i know i had read somewhere that an orgasm in first 2 wks could injure or affect healing) and this may be related more so to my hernia repair, but do you think laying on my tummy is okay? (it's hard to explain, but necessary for me to achieve orgasm <blush>)

and sort of related, too, would swimming on Monday (6wk mark) be okay, considering what i said above about keeping my cervix and all...???)

Re: Sex question 5 2/3 weeks post-op

Wait for your doctor's okay. There is no reason to rush back into anything, is there? Why risk infection or complications?

My doctor's instructions were NOTHING in the vagina and no sexual relations of any kind until he released me to do so. And since there is only one chance to heal correctly, I followed his advice to the letter. At six weeks, I had a pelvic exam to make sure everything was okay and healed and at that point he released me to resume normal activities.

It's your choice to do whatever it is you want to do. If you choose to engage in sex before obtaining your doctor's release, that's up to you. Just realize that if you do, and something happens, not only will you have to recover from a setback, the only person to blame for that setback will be you.

Since you say your recovery has gone well, I would make sure it remains that way by not taking chances...

The exam is to check the internal stiches and make sure they have properly healed. Until you get the DR OK, stay out of the pool. I suppose you could call the office today and ask about swimming if you are going somewhere special for the weekend. Otherwise, be safe and wait.

Re: Sex question 5 2/3 weeks post-op

I had an LAVH and the doctor told me I could go swimming after about 4 weeks. I've had abdominal surgery a few times and I've always been able to swim at right around 6 weeks. I'd call the doctor and ask - if you want to go swimming this weekend, there may be no reason you can't.

Re: Sex question 5 2/3 weeks post-op

I would not do any of those things until the doctor say you can. I was not allowed to swim for 8 weeks. I didn't start intercourse until my 11th week. Don't rush things. It sounds like you are doing really well & I would not want to mess that up.

Re: Sex question 5 2/3 weeks post-op

Hi Purple, I had a LSH which kept my ovaries and my cervix. I know in my case the cervix was not sutured but they cauterize inside what is left of it. That generally causes it to scar over and close up. I was given the okay for sex at two weeks since I was healing so well. I chose to wait until about four weeks. I took it slowly and things were great no more bleeding after sex. I would wait for the doctors okay because it sounds like you had a few other things going on. He is going to do a pelvic and take a look and if he or she okay's it you should be fine to do whatever. Good Luck
