Getting out of bed

Hi!
from previous surgeries, the way that causes least discomfort to the abdomen is log roll to the side of the bed, as close to the edge as possible, then push up with the "down"arm while lowering both legs (smushed together). this lets gravity pull on the legs without using tummy muscles. if you can get a sturdy bar/chair/table next to the bed, it is good to hold on to when coming to stand.

Ask the hospital nurse to help you get out of bed the first time. They will explain the rolling movement and will make sure you can get out of bed with the minimum pain.

If you have a mechanical bed, and you most likely will, you can use it to help tip you upright as you lay on your side. Using the nurse for support is fine but tell her/him in no uncertain terms that you do NOT want to be pulled up! I had a nurse "help" me like that after my first C-section and it was not pleasant! From that point on I made it clear that I would do it on my own at my own pace but no way was I to be pulled up.

You didn't ask, but getting back into bed was always easier for me if I went in on all fours, sort of crawling in on hands and knees rather than sitting and scooting back.

Good luck with your surgery and recovery!

Getting out of bed

Hi,

Someone once suggested tying a rope to the foot of the bed and using it to pull yourself up. I never tried it, but it might work. The log-roll manuver worked best for me.

I am planning on being in an electric lift chair recliner which will stand me up. i think these can be rented too. any of you that are in waiting, try strengthening your upper arms by lifting weights. i have been doing bicep curls to strengthen my upper arms for weeks now.
