Ok, this is an embarressing question and I need advice from anyone who might know. I went for preop Friday and I have to do a home enema (Fleets) Monday morning before going to the hospital. Sounds simple, huh? Wellllllllll, the hospital I go to is 2 hours away. I have to be there at 6:00 a.m. which means I have to leave at 4:00 a.m. Okay, when do I do the enema? How long does it take to work? When will it be "safe" to start on the trip? I HATE having to ask this question, but if anyone can give me help, I would surely appreciate it.

Hi Debn,

Actually, it is a very good question.

My mom had to have an enema the morning before one of her surgeries, and was 2 1/2 hours from the hospital. She ended up staying in a motel close to the hospital the night before.

If this wouldn't work for you, you might call your Dr's office and explain your situation to them and ask them to help you with a solution. They may be willing to admit you the night before.

You are wise to get this arranged ahead of time.

Whew! Dont have an answer for you but I can say you are quicker on the draw than I am. I would have forgotten to plan and ended up just sportin a pair of rubber pants for the drive!

Please let me know what the doc says so I can avoid that situation....my hubby will be driving me and I dont think he would be very happy with THAT situation in his new truck. hee hee.

i used the fleet enema the night before at about 8. the fleet was very fast acting and i only had to use the potty twice that night. i had very little to eat the day of the prep, so i think that helped me a lot. i'd call the dr and ask for their suggestions. best wishes.

I had to do one the night before and the one before we left. the one in the morning took maybe 15 minutes and I had nothing in my system so I was ok. I would askthe Dr. office and see what they say.

I didn't have an enema before surgery but I had one 3 days after surgery, while still in the hospital. I started feeling the effects of the enema about half hour later. I don't think there was much in my system for the enema to work with, so I had only one quick trip to the potty. I remember having an enema 24 years ago. It took effect within half an hour and kept me "busy" for at least that time.

Best wishes and 's

My surgery is June 12. I had my pre op yesterday. My GYN told me to take a fleet enema anytime after I get settled down Sunday night. No particular time. I also have to do a benadine douche. I think I may not have spelled that correctly. It is to get any bacteria out of the vagina. Good Luck! No question is a bad question.

Oh! Thank you all so very, very much. I do not feel so silly after all!! I did call and they said before bedtime was fine since my surgery was set for 7:00. I would never had had the courage to call if it were not for you all. Thanks again. You are the best!!!
