surgery 1/5 ..remove fallopian tubes??

I am 33 years old. I am having a total hysterectomy (uterus and cervix) but leaving ovaries. They are doing this laproscopically but removing through the vagina too I believe. I am not as versed on all the methods as I thought. I have had two c sections so this is all dependent on scar tissue I think he said but this is the plan. I am having it done because so much of my cervix had to be removed from the cone after filled margins from a LEEP (CIN3 was found). The cone showed focal points of can not exlude carcinoma in situ outside of the margins and I think the fear is that there are more of these scattered focal points along with an underlying immune issue (they say it's lupus or lupus like) along with an almost non existent cervix at this point which poses a risk too I was told. They said it is UP TO ME about my fallopian tubes. Has anybody done research about the likelihood of going into menopause from removal of fallopian tubes?? I saw some posts in here that it's fairly standard nowadays. My surgeon from sloane kettering told me the risk is cutting the nerve to the ovary by accident and it failing but this is RARE. it seemed like a no brainer but now it is seeming more complicated than that. HELP!!

Re: surgery 1/5 ..remove fallopian tubes??

Prior to my surgery, it wasn't clear what all would have to be removed (I had a large dermoid, and it was difficult to determine what all it had attached to). I don't know how much help this is, but I specifically remember my surgeon saying that removing the tube would not have an impact one way or another. I ended up losing one ovary and one tube.
Best of luck with your surgery and recovery!

If it were me... I would probably remove the tubes and leave the ovaries. Not being in your shoes that's easy for me to say, but here's my reasoning: from a scar tissue/pain stand point, if adhesion's were to form on them and shrink over time as adhesion's do - it would pull and cause pain until surgery was performed to lyse the adhesion's. Surgery causes adhesion's and more surgery exacerbates the problem.

That being said --- I think no matter how the surgery is done, and what exactly is removed (other than the uterus)-- we all *seem* to run the risk of our ovaries going into shock & not returning to normal function. Each woman's body is different and no one can say for sure how that is predicted.

I'm 25 and scheduled for laparoscopic hysterectomy, hoping to only have the uterus removed, but due to scar tissue from prior c-sections & other surgeries it seems apparent that the cervix and ovaries could end up taken out too. :-S

I am scheduled for DvH on January 29th and my gyn is taking my tubes as well because she said that it is believed that ovarian cancer starts in the tubes.

Re: surgery 1/5 ..remove fallopian tubes??

My surgeon said recent studies have shown that ovarian cancer begins in the tubes. The only thing I have left are my ovaries. There is a lot of cancer in my family, my mom has had breast and uterine cancer and my dad and grandmother both died of brain cancer. My pap smear came back abnormal earlier this year and I had to have a colposcopy. My pathology report showed cin1 cells throughout my cervix but no other signs of cancer anywhere. I also had large fibroids.

surgery 1/5 ..remove fallopian tubes??

I had an abdominal surgery and my uterus and tubes were removed. I kept both ovaries and cervix. Studies have shown that ovarian cancer often begins in the Fallopian tubes and removing them doesn't increase the likelihood of premature menopause.

Re: surgery 1/5 ..remove fallopian tubes??

I definitely knew about ovarian cancer potentially starting in the tubes part of it.. it sounds as if the risks of going into premature menopause are no more or no less with removal of the tubes though which makes it easier to say yes to it.

Just do your research and pray for wisdom. When you have peace, make your decision and don't be intimidated or pressured by relatives or friends. I wish you a complete and quick recovery.

I did not know that ovarian cancer started in the tubes! Thanks for that bit of wisdom! Will definitely be asking that they be removed while he's there.

Re: surgery 1/5 ..remove fallopian tubes??

I have a total hyst as well on 1/15 for adenocarcinoma in situ (unclear margins). My Dr is removing the tubes because he said that they can fill with fluid later on and cause problems (basically an unused body part to worry about as well). I will be keeping my one ovary (had the other out due to a dermoid cyst early in 2012).
