Hypothyroidism and menopause
Hi Ladies:
I am experiencing night sweats and hot flashes which I am trying to figure out how to control. At present I am thyroid medication for hypothyroidism and I thought I could take a soy based called Healthy woman soy menopause supplement. Well I have taken 2 tablets and I was just doing research on the supplement only to find out it would cause my thyroid medication not to work.
Is there any suggestion what kind of vitamin/supplement I can take to treat the hot flashes/night sweats that will not cause my thyroid medication not to work?
I am at a loss since these hot flashes are driving me nuts.

Black cohosh may help but I don't know about the interaction with youcurrent medication. Remifemin is a product from Germany that uses the black cohosh. Check it out. It may help.

Thanks for responding; I will check into it.
I read on Webmd that black cohosh should not be taken if someone has liver issues. I have been told several times my liver enzymes were elevated.

Re: Hypothyroidism and menopause
(((lstewart14))) How to manage the night sweats and hot flashes depends on what is causing them. Your member survey indicates that you kept your ovaries; they may not be working right now, or if they are, perhaps the symptoms are from thyroid issues.
I would talk with your endocrinologist about what you can do... in the case that it's your ovaries causing the symptoms, women with hypothyroidism can use HRT, but it tends to end up requiring adjustment of the thyroid meds as well. A couple of non-HRT alternatives you might ask about are clonodine (catapres) and belladonna in addition to certain antidepressants, but all of those options require a prescription -- not a bad thing since you'll want to talk with the endocrinologist about your thyroid meds anyway.

Re: Hypothyroidism and menopause
Linda,
Thanks for the advice; I am actually planning to call my endocrinologist this coming monday. Hopefully I can make an appointment to see her versus over the phone.
I asked my ob/gyn about the HRT and she said I do not need to due to the fact I still have one ovary. She said the one ovary just needs to wake up.
I am just frustrated with waking up soaking wet at night.
