Lapro vs Total

Good morning! Another morning, another question! LOL

I spoke with a surgeon this week and she says that we could do a laproscopic procedure with me even though I have fibroids and have never had children. I am a bit confused by this but trust her judgement. I do have an appointment for a second opinion though

My question is this, I know 3 ladies who have had hysterectomies. One had an abdominal one and was walking around a shopping mall 2 weeks later, the other two had laproscopic procedures and have had nothing but problems. One had her ureter nicked, the other her bowel.

I understand that laproscopic is a "faster" recovery time, although the surgeon said I would still be off for 6 weeks, but is it worth the risk to the other organs? All three had different surgeons.

Thank you for your help!

Re: Lapro vs Total

I had a TLH. I guess it depends a lot on your doctor and how skilled they are. Also there is always a risks regardless of the surgery type. My laprosocpic surgery included a 3 inch abdominal incision because i had a large fibroid that was too big to remove vaginally and it was calcified so it was hard to break it up because it was as hard as a rock. He did break it up some though because i would have needed a TAH to remove it full sized. My doctor had been making laproscopic hysterectomy for many many years. He was very comfortable. He didn't do it standard but was able to give me a minimally invasive surgery as possible. I am grateful. A week later I am doing great. Yes things get nick at times but that could happen with any kind of surgery type.

Re: Lapro vs Total

I had a daVinci, the robotically-assisted laproscopic hysterectomy and have had a nearly pain-free recovery with no major complications. My only issues have been due to the lymph node removal, not the hysterectomy. I never had kids either, which I think made me a better candidate for this method. I'm really grateful that this technology was available to me and I'd go the same route if I had it to do over. Good luck with your surgery, glad to hear you are getting second opinion. It never hurts to talk to another doctor.
