Surgery less than three weeks -- coughing
Surgery (DaVinci subtotal hysterectomy, sacrocolpoperineopexy, and TVT bladder sling -- the works) is scheduled for July 17. I really want this over and done with before school starts in late August (I'm a teacher). The prolapses presented themselves in dramatic fashion in March after a bad cough. I'm still coughing a dry cough (doctor thinks it's a combination of allergies and GERD -- just started treatment for the latter and am hitting the allergy hard too with steroid nose spray and antihistimines). Then of course, the day after I see the dr about the GERD, I get a cold, and now the cough is worse. I can't tell if the GERD treament is even working. If I were anyone else, I'd say I have plenty of time to get over the cough, but this is a cough from %$#.
Last night I took cough medicine with codeine and it didn't even help.
It seems like coughing through recovery would be most unpleasant and could possibly jeopardize the repairs. Anyone have any advice or any experience with going into surgery with a cough?

Re: Surgery less than three weeks -- coughing
mercyme
for you as you approach your surgery date.
I don't have any experience with going into surgery w/ a cough. I did have the daVinci, it wouldn't be pleasant coughing a lot but I don't think as bad as the abdominal incisions.
I hope by now it's let up a bit and isn't as much of a concern.
Here's sending prayers for a successful surgery and uneventful recovery.

Re: Surgery less than three weeks -- coughing
Thanks for the reply. I went back to the dr this week because I wasn't much better. She said my lungs were clear. She changed the antihistamine. I am coughing less, but am still congested and have a sore throat. Still...going in the right direction I think.
I have a pre-op appointment on Wed. at the hospital, with surgery still scheduled for Friday. I'm sure they'll check me out there as well.

Re: Surgery less than three weeks -- coughing
I had a TAH/BSO and got a cough shortly after. I have horrible sinus problems that five different prescriptions have not helped. If you have a cough - hold a small pillow over your tummy to help hold things in place and lessen the pain. I still have a cough and worry about problems down the road due to that. Best of luck to you. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

Believe it or not...coughing didn't hurt me that bad....I would use my pillow and hold my tummy and it was okay....and I'm a smoker.

Re: Surgery less than three weeks -- coughing
Thanks for the pillow trick and the reassurance. The cough has definitely improved over the last few days -- no longer producing discolored gunk and the cough is merely annoying but no longer violent. I feel better about going through with the surgery on Friday.
I sent in the check to the surgeon, bought gallons of liquids for the fasting on Thursday, bought the magnesium citrate (yuck), all the OTC post-op stuff to help the digestive track along, yogurt and bran muffins, easy stuff for my guys to cook (yes, I live with my husband and two sons -- could get interesting). The bed steps I ordered online so that I can climb into bed (I have a very tall, antique bed that at the moment requires gymnastics to get into) have come in -- need to be assembled.
I have lots of reading material.
Anything else I need?

Gas X? I also remembered someone mentioned bringing cough drops or lozenges to the hospital. I know that I was hoarse after my thyroid surgery and needed something to soothe my throat.

Mercyme....you need to get candy...one of the sisters told how she rewarded her family with candy...when they would bring her stuff or she had to call for them. I wish I did that when I was recovering....my family loves candy and they would have came to my aid a lot faster.

Re: Surgery less than three weeks -- coughing
That's a great idea. My husband would come running to my side if I had M&Ms. If I couldn't get his attention, at least I'd have candy to comfort me. Yep, definitely a good idea
