I can relate to this because I have mild Asperger's. You know how some people say that they "get energy" from interacting with other people? For me, dealing with other people - even people I like - is always an energy drain.

Going shopping always requires a bit of a recovery period afterwards, simply because it involves dealing with other people. This is especially true if the store is moderately crowded. (If the store is extremely crowded, I abandon the shopping trip, go home and try again some other day.)

My point is that I've had to learn to recognize that because of the way my brain is wired, I need to allow for a recovery period after some kinds of apparently innocuous activities. This isn't something to be ashamed of - it's simply how my particular mind and body work.

Likewise, if your body is recovering from major surgery, you may need to give it time to rest after activities that you would normally consider to be no big deal. Where your body is physically at this point in time, a short shopping trip may indeed be a big deal.

Re: What Can I Do That Won't Be a No-No?

i am now 5 days post op laproscopic hysterectomy. Had a bit of a setback as I now have an infection & possibly a heamatoma on my bladder (a further scan& bloods tomorrow may confirm this). However, that said, I have been told by the gyne staff at the hospital to do 10 minute gentle walks twice daily in the first 2 weeks then gradually build it up. Today I managed a proper 10 minute walk along the seafront, rested for half an hour then 10 minute walk back. It was very slow & yes, painful in my abdomen at times, but I did it ok & promptly crashed out in my bed for 2 hours afterwards! That is literally all I can manage & my body tells me when to 2 stop. Listen to your body! It is very important, but at the same time try to stay mobile to some extent due to possible blood clot issues.

Re: What Can I Do That Won't Be a No-No?

Thanks so much Surfbabe50. So sorry to hear of your complications but it sounds like you're doing well as can be expected otherwise.

I went walking in two stores Saturday and tried my best to take it easy (hubby drove, pushed the buggy, lifted heavy items and bags) but it was so upsetting to me because my belly was swollen even more and I probably did too much because I've had pain in my groin area increase since then.

It's taken me about 3 days to get back to feeling the way I did before shopping; so it's always hard to know at the moment what is too much and what isn't. Sometimes you don't know until the day after an otherwise normal activity how it will affect you.

It's frustrating to me, but now I know to only do that type of shopping once or twice a week and do a little walking (less than I did) in between those events.
