Looking for info.

Hi Everyone-

I hope I am in the right forum for my question. My Gyn has recommended a hysterectomy for a prolapsed uterus. I am in the "info garthering process" before I am ready to part with my parts - so to speak. I am waiting for a second opinion (in a couple of weeks).

I read somewhere on the internet (don't remember which site) that with a partial hysterectomy (ovaries left in - don't know if I have the right terminology), about 50% of those cases the ovaries fail within 5 years. Now, I know not to believe everything that is found on the internet, however I haven't found any other stats either way relating to the functioning of the ovaries after a partial hysterectomy. I am concerned about this because I had an allergic reaction to BC pills (used for serious hormone imbalance) and may not be able to use conventional HRT. I am still in my mid-30's and don't feel ready to start menopause.

I will pose my questions/concerns directly to my doc when I see her for my consultation - after the second opinion. In the mean time I am wondering if your experiences jive with the stat I read.

In addition, are there any other "complications" you would recommend I ask about? For instance, I have read (on several sites) that after hysterectomy, women may be at higher risk for vaginal vault prolapse (I already have a enterocele, rectocele and cystocele that has to be repaired).

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

- Jamie

Hi Jamie,

I'm glad you found us!

I'm providing a link to our Resources area here at Hystersisters where you can search for detailed information on many of the topics that you mentioned.

Resources

You are correct that sometimes the ovaries do fail after a hyst, primarily due to inadequate blood supply. But be sure to ask your gyn about the statistics for his/her patients. You are smart to be asking this question now, prior to surgery. It's best to be prepared for any possible consequences.

I have also read that after a hyst, particularly when the cervix is removed, women are at greater risk for vaginal vault prolapse. So be sure to ask your doc how he/she will try to prevent this during your surgery.

Keep reading, keep asking questions, and we'll do our best to provide support. Be sure you understand all your options and make the decision that feels best for YOU. Sending hugs your way.
