Vitamin C Pre-Op???

I know you are supposed to stop Advil and aspirin prior to surgery, has anyone heard anything about Vitamin C???

I thought i had heard that somewhere, but not sure.

I am getting a stinkin cold and would like to double up on my vitamins, but don't want to risk delaying the surgery -

If anyone knows about Vitamin C or any other vitamins, and meds and how they react during surgery please let me know.
thanks!!

Vitamin C Pre-Op???

My advice is to call your dr. He/she should be able to let you know what you can and cannot take. You may need some meds to help get rid of the cold. I got the sniffles a week of so before my hyst. My dr prescribed an antibiotic that took care of it and my surgery went as scheduled.

Best wishes.

Vitamin C Pre-Op???

My dad, the king of supplements, swears by Vitamin C for healing - everyone in my family gets megadoses both before and after surgery, and we all heal ahead of schedule.

It even makes your teeth respond more quickly to braces - I had mine on for only 14 months when the orthodontist expected two years.

Vitamin C Pre-Op???

JulieBr -
Thanks for that info. I really want to take the C in mega doses, but was afraid that it might have some ill effect - seems like when my son had surgery they told me no Vit. C -

Maybe I am just remembering wrong, I should just call I guess!!!
Don't want to bug them for something so small!!

I too believe in the healing power of the big C!!!

Vitamin C Pre-Op???

Rochelle,
I haven't heard anything about Vitamin C (pro or con) with regard to surgery. You might want to ask your doctor about that. But you should be aware that mega doses of Vitamin C can cause diarrhea. There is probably no such thing as an "overdose" of Vitamin C, since the excess is just flushed out of your body. But there's always the possibility of diarrhea if you take a lot. (This is good to know when you have constipation and want to move things in the other direction!) Just FYI.

Vitamin C Pre-Op???

Hi there
In my case I was told NO supplements before surgery at all but to start a womens multi-vitamin as soon as I got home again. I had a really good recovery, which may or may not have anything to do with taking them. My Dr advised me to keep taking them until I have finished chemo and I think I may just keep them always.
Good luck

Vitamin C Pre-Op???

My doctor recommended that I read *Hysterectom: Before and After*. It's on the list of books recommended on this site also. It recommends taking as much vitamin C as your body tolerates (without getting sick/diarrhea). I have been upping my intake slowly (as recommended). I am currently at 3000 mg daily and don't think I'll go any higher.

As always you need to discuss this with your doctor. I have spoken to my doctor about this and being that my surgery is still 4 weeks off, he has not said anything to me about it. I do go in on the 3rd and then once again before my surgery on the 23rd. He may tell me to ease up on it or that it's okay or to stop altogether a week prior. Just keep him informed so that he knows. From what I've read here on the Hyster Sisters site and in other publications, most herbs should be stopped prior to surgery if you are using them. I've also read that herbs should be treated as you would other prescribed medications. Basically, that they should not be taken as preventative medications.
