how long do vaginal cuff stitches take to dissolve after hysterectomy?

Hi im 2 weeks post op had total hysterectomy, both ovaries and lymph glands removed. How long does it take for the vaginal cuff stitches to dissolve. Also i have a strange sensation above my bikini line its like a tingly numb sensation on the right hand side. Feels very raw to touch.

Re: how long do vaginal cuff stitches take to dissolve after hysterectomy?

It all depends on what type of suture material your surgeon used, so your surgeon is the best person to ask. Another way to get this information is to request your Operative Report. All surgeons have their own preference or may use a longer lasting suture because of their patients health history. Generally they dissolve from 10 days to several months. Sometimes you can see little coloured bits of thread on the toilet tissue.

The raw tingly feeling is probably your nerves healing from the trauma of surgery.

Re: how long do vaginal cuff stitches take to dissolve after hysterectomy?

Mine took about five weeks to start dissolving, and it felt strange -- a few prickly zing sensations, and then I'd get the barest amount of some very light lint when I wiped after peeing.

The numbness and tingling is from the nerves being cut when they cut the skin. While they grow back, it can feel VERY sensitive. Sometimes there is a little stripe of skin along the incision that takes a long time to recover from the numbness, but the super-sensitivity goes away after a bit.

Re: how long do vaginal cuff stitches take to dissolve after hysterectomy?

I am about 2.5 weeks post op now and have been wondering the same thing. For the last 2 days I have had light discharge/spotting light pink to brown. I have also been having the same types of pain you are describing.

I did a search here and many threads came up explaining this is normal. I have not seen any threads, but it feels like something is happening down there!

Re: how long do vaginal cuff stitches take to dissolve after hysterectomy?

I was told my surgeon I was a slow healer when mine were not dissolved at 7 weeks. Turned it took 12 weeks for mine to totally dissolve but from what I understand that is NOT the norm. I was starting to panic but I'm not almost 14 weeks post op and things seem to be getting back to normal. Good luck.
