must haves?
Hi, Click here for a list of what to take to the hospital.
I really only used a few things while I was there. I used my chap stick, ear plugs ( hospitals can be very noisy sometimes ), my favorite bed pillow from home ( don't like skimpy hospital ones ), my slippers, and robe for going home. I wore the hospital gowns ( 2 at a time facing opposite ) & had less laundry to take home. My tummy pillow was my best friend for awhile.

My tummy pillow was a small Taz shaped one It was about 10 inches wide and 14 or so tall. My DD loves Taz and gave it to me. It worked pretty well and made me smile

must haves?
I bought a Spongebob Squarepants pillow at Target in the kid's decorating section. I love it - it puts a smile on my face.
My surgery is tomorrow afternoon, and I actually think the things I'm going to need most are my Olay Daily Facials (I have really oily skin), chap stick and sleeping mask/ear plugs. I'm having my sister french braid my hair tomorrow morning so I don't have to deal with hair (which is also very oily) while I'm there.
Good luck with your preparations and surgery!

lisse - my favorite thing in the hospital was my ipod. focus is not that great after surgery - even TV for a long time is difficult... the music relaxed me and blocked out the noises so i could sleep. I also took my own pillow(s) to the hospital - it was very comforting! Some kind of satchel that u can tie to the bed is nice - to hold the little things u need without having to get up to get them. That little bedside table fills up fast.... Definitely chapstick...
Have a stool softener on hand for after.... the BM issue can be hard... hah! get it? LOL You can ask your doc about that.... but it took me weeks before i was near normal in that area! And definitely set up some kind of bedside table (I used one of our TV Tables) and put it as close to the bed as u can... reaching to get things can be painful...
Hope u have a great recovery!!!! Soon u will be the princess you have always wanted to be!!!!

must haves?
Back scratcher...became the first used and most important item for me the first 24 hrs in the castle. I had the leg compressions and they were so itchy that I think I would have gone insane with out it. Even the nurses who saw me using it asked where I got it (at the dollar store) so they could get some to give out to their patients.
Lip balm or chap stick...my lips were severly chapped from the surgery
Really good face moisturizer...again my skin seemed really dry after the surgery especially around my nose from the oxygen.
My #1 suggestion for after you get home.........
Get a basket with a handle, one large enough to hold things you will use alot but not so big that it will get to heavy to carry.
In mine I have my meds, small note pad, pen, hairbrush, barrette, cell phone, house cordless phone, paperback book I 'm reading, nail file, cuticle cream, crackers, ect..... I carry this with me everywhere even to the bathroom. That way I have my most needed items with me and I don't have to get up and go looking for them when I want them. My bedroom is upstairs and finding that I had left something needed (or wanted) downstairs was such a pain and it saved me from having to ask someone else to go fetch something.
Having my basket in the bathroom has saved me more than once. I had to use my cell phone once to call someone to come help me.

Of the items on the list referred to by our hostess, the items I appreciated to most were:
my own pjs.....Someone recommended satin or silky one that you can slip in and out of bed with. These were great! It made that painful turning from side to side easier too. The nurses were all impressed with the idea! Mine were cheap even, I found them at Kmart of all places.
Cell phone. the hospital one was way out of reach and I wasn't sure of the rules with it. Besides, all my numbers were stored on my phone.
I loved having a book to read, although I could not seem to concentrate on more than a few pages at a time.
Ipod was fabulous.
Knitting....well, I maybe did a row or two when I felt better. Definitely used my knitting at home to keep me active yet out of trouble...

must haves?
My surgery was 8/13 and was released on 8/17.
My must have for the hospital: my own pillow, I brought one regular and one small bean shape(for pregnant women).
I was never offered a bath, until the last day I asked for stuff, so speak up if no offers, I had brought my own baby wipes, baby powder and deoderant.
Lysol wipes to go because everything was sticky and I wanted it to be clean (I am a little OCD on germs).
A bit of make up to make me feel pretty and got a lot of compliments. Chap stick. Face wash cloths. Comb.
A light reading book, would read a few pages every hour or so after naps and walks.
I wore a dress they day of surgery so I could wear home, along with bed room flip flops.
A little plastic bag for garbage. Tied to my bed.
A hand held fan for hot flashes, not able to use hormones.
That is all I can think of now. Hope this helps.

must haves?
Best wishes for your trip to the castle! Here is what I did:
1. Wore my normal clothes to the castle. (going in strong and confident) Put on hosp gown and bagged normal clothes to send home with hubby. Had a separate bag packed of go-home clothes: stretchy PJ shorts outfit with DRAWSTRING waist!
2. Borrowed my daughter's mp3 player. Downloaded all of MY kind of music on it and played with it before hand to understand how to use it before drugs!
3. Loaded up a fanny pack. Put all things I thought I must have in it....cell phone, chap stick, pack tissues, sm brush, mp3 player AND batteries. Attach fanny pack to bed and everything is at your reach. Also attached my watch to the pack as the clock was in an odd place and I dont always have my glasses on.
What I wished I would've had.....
My own pillow...not for the comforts of home necessarily, but the hosp ones have plastic covers and sweating is the worst. Ask nurses to bring in extra blankets to line your bed with so you don't lay on that plastic mattress and pillows! If you think of it do it before you even get transferred to your room. Request it or make sure your person at the castle requests it for you,,,your going to be in that bed for a while before you can move, the sweating just adds to the misery of grogginess.
If I had known it was OK to complain about a nurse... For heavens sake, if you FEEL that your RN is inadequate, let someone know. After suffering through most of one's shift, I had the opportunity to speak with another nurse in the hallway...do it. They made sure I didn't have that one again for the rest of my stay. I'm quite bashful and can put up with a lot, but it is unnecessary. Everyone wants your stay to be as pleasant as possible.
Good luck ladies and I hope this helps. As soon as doc gives the OK, get up walking and drinking and think *toot*!!
