Totally freaking out!!!!

I have been reading about the "mesh" sling on this site.

AND i even watched a video of the procedure. (totally horrifying)

I am completely and totally freaked out about having this done. I did not realize what all they do to "put the mesh" in. There is NO WAY that is going to fit in me! I am only 5'1"!

This "rope like thing" they use, HECK I CAN USE IT AS A JUMP ROPE and they are going to put it in me?????
Then they shove this little piece of plastic up your urethra!! OMG!! I am totally freaked out now!!!

I thought it was just this little piece of "mesh" they put in you...but OMG there was NO MENTION about this long rope like thing they ANCHOR to your HIP BONES! (okay, not hip bones, but i am a little freaked)

Not to mention all these "warnings" that i am reading and hearing about.

The mesh the doctor is going to use is not "natural"..heck he told me and now i FORGOT and of course it is SATURDAY so i can not call!!!

I think i need a drink and i don't drink..a big drink. Think maybe i might even take up drinking and be a drunk till April 12th (time to sober up before surgery).

Re: Totally freaking out!!!!

LOL - I felt like I needed a drink too before surgery daisyforest! Don't stay looped until the night before though, or you'll have a big headache after surgery.

Don't watch any more videos. You'll be fine. If it couldn't be done, your doc wouldn't be doing it. I'm not much taller than you, and I had a TVT done with my LAVH - I did/am doing just fine with it.

The only thing I would say is it's really important to have confidence in your surgeon. If you don't, you need to get a second opinion.

Good luck!

Re: Totally freaking out!!!!

OMG - why in the helk would you watch the surgery?!?!? That would freak you out about ANY surgery - from wisdom teeth to heart surgery. I don't want to see what they are doing, I just want them to do it and make me feel better.
Reading about warnings - not from random internet places - is logical. Watch your sources. And be selective. That's a smart thing to do, to prepare yourself. I would stay away from the videos. That would serve no purpose other than to completely and totally trip you out.

I had my night of drinking last night, so I feel you on that one.

Good luck!

Re: Totally freaking out!!!!

Sending hugs your way. It's okay to be nervous, I was plenty nervous before my turn on March 2nd.

But I never watched a video~ too much information for me. Read information from credible sourses and believing in your doctor is important. If you don't please get a second opinion.

You are doing this to feel better so please focus on that. Spend time getting your house organized and come here for support but sometimes to much information makes us more nervous than we need to be.

Have confidence and look forward to feeling better . Hugs

You don't want to watch the video...i am telling you, i sat here thinking OMG OMG OMG OMG!!! The image is forever burned in my head.

Now of course i just added 10 more questions for the doctor come Monday. They are going to be so sick of me!

Thanks girls...

Re: Totally freaking out!!!!

Yahhh... I know... my surgeon did an "OR Live" video of pretty much the exact surgery I'll be going through on Monday. (sigh) In one sense, I really didn't want to know what they are going to do to me. ("they're going to pull what out of WHAT??!?") I prefer the illusion of some dignity. But, at the same time, in his video, he discussed why his approach to laparoscopic hysterectomy is superior to the "standard" approach. Why he claims that there's a lower complication rate, etc. You become "armed" with better knowledge... a greater ability to decide what's best for you. Like you mentioned, you now have tons more questions for a doctor. Can that be a bad thing?

Re: Totally freaking out!!!!

I wouldn't have minded seeing all of my surgery. I even asked if I could see my uterus, tubes and ovaries post op, but they couldn't get me awake enough for me to see them. Maybe it's because I work in the medical field and wanted to see what everything really looks like and exactly what they were doing to me.

I had a TVT sling put in on 01/12/10. I have not had any problems and my urologist warned me (gave me the print out of all the FDA warnings) about the mesh. I didn't start "freaking out" until the week before the surgery and then I got rather nervous and wondering if I was doing the right thing. I don't regret it at all. I had a TVH, BSO, and AP repair in addition to the sling.

I asked what the criteria was post op as far as the bladder sling as I didn't want to come home and have to self cath. I was told I had to urinate 200 cc's and not less than 100 cc's left in my bladder. I started dinking lots of water as soon as the catheter came out and walked around. I had to meet the criteria 3 times in 6 hours. They told me it would take me a good 2 hours before I'd even be able to go the first time. It took me an hour. I know there can be complications with anything, but I wouldn't change having mine done. Sometimes having too much information is not a good thing, but sometimes not having enough is not a good thing (I would have liked to have known it takes 6months to a year to heal well before I had surgery so I could prepare better). Good luck!
