Fatigue normal @ 5 weeks?
Hi there, ,
I am wondering if any other members are finding that by mid-day you are ready for a nap (at around the 5 week post-op mark). I won't be going back to work until mid July, but I'm already getting a little concerned that this feeling isn't going to subside by the time I have to get back to the office.
Any information or tips about how to prepare for returning to work would be much appreciated.

Re: Fatigue normal @ 5 weeks?
I hope I don't 'offend' you by explaining my answer..................YES, it is 'normal' ..................I had an LAVH, BUT, I have also had 2 c-sections (MUCH younger) .............I can't help but 'compare, and frankly, this is so much 'more' than a C ..................
Basically, take a breath, relax, what is 'right' for you, is right ( If you want a nap....TAKE IT )

Re: Fatigue normal @ 5 weeks?
Absolutely no offense taken!! Your reply is much appreciated !!
Before my surgery, I was very active. I am a runner and was running 20-25K per week, and working full time, etc. etc. Now, I get up, go for a walk (not a long one, 30 minutes), come home, do a few dishes...sweep the floor, and I'm ready to pack it in!!
I was just reading another thread about returning to work, and it was helpful just to hear that other people don't have their energy return fully after the designated 6-8 week recovery period.
Frankly, I was just thrilled to wake up after the surgery!! Silly me, but that's true. I wasn't really prepared for the length of the recovery.
Thanks for your encouragement.

Re: Fatigue normal @ 5 weeks?
I can imagine your frustration, especially because you are an athlete.
I am also at the 5 week mark, and although I'm doing a lot more things now, I get tired by midday and afternoon too. This morning, I walked the dog for a few miles, drove to the grocery store, and then sat at the computer the rest of the morning returning emails and internet shopping. It's not even noon yet, and I'm already planning to lay on the couch for a few.
You're lucky you don't have to return to work till July, cuz I have to start back next week. So use your time at home to continue resting. You will eventually get back to your former acitivities, just listen to your body when it's too tired to do things.
I'm with you, and happy recovery!

Re: Fatigue normal @ 5 weeks?
Thanks for responding Gigi...I will be anxious to hear how you make out at work. Are you able to start back slowly?? (half days, maybe?) You're right, I am lucky that I don't have to go back til July. I work at a university, and have a great sick leave policy. My follow up appointment is not until July 4th, so my gp wrote a certificate til the 11th of July.
I can tell you that the weather here in Nova Scotia is not helping with the fatigue!! Rain, rain, and more rain and cool temperatures. We could all use a little Southern California sunshine here!
Thanks for writing, and keep me posted on your return to work.

Re: Fatigue normal @ 5 weeks?
I am at week 3 tomorrow. I can function about 2 hours than I have to rest. I try not to sleep because I would rather sleep at night. I am lucky because I teach and do not have to go back to work until Aug. 15th.

Re: Fatigue normal @ 5 weeks?
This makes me feel much better, reading these replies.
I too am active. I'm a Professional working 55+ hours a week and I workout 4 days a week as well. It's been so frustrating that a. I have to leave work at 4:30 b/c I'm beat and b. that I have to lay around all night. I push myself to take walks, but I tend to push too much and then I'm down for the count for 2 days.
When does it turn around? I'm hoping week 6. I went back to work after 2.5 weeks.

I worry because there seem to be so many with really tough, tragic things goin' on and some that mentioning children, well, hurts them and I don't want to do that.............A trip to town ( 35 miles one way, about 3-4 hrs total time) Wipes me out (and I'm not even driving and use a step stool to get in and out of my 'grocery getter' ) Though, I had a 'kinder, gentler' surgery, I am surpised at the lack of stamina I have...... I was very active before (and will be again) I just have to have patience with myself (soooooooo much easier to give advice, tougher to follow )
You were not alone over that 'stressor', I had it too........I had spinals with my previous, never had general.......That was the only thing that 'got to' me..........(so NOT, 'silly' to me at all )

Re: Fatigue normal @ 5 weeks?
I was still resting a lot at the 5 weeks mark. I would advise to listen to your body, if it says nap, then nap. :-) if you can...
