Re: Insensitive People

I 100% feel ya! I told my boss that I would be off work 3-4 weeks, per my dr orders and I thought he was going to come unglued!! Granted I am the only employee he has, it's not a huge business that he won't be able to handle by himself, or with his adult daughters help after she gets off work, they will manage!! I've operated the buisness on 2 separate occasions for 2 weeks all by myself with NO help at all so he could leave our snowy cold weather and go to sunny Mexico!! Yet he wants me to come back after a week and answer run the office, at least. Ugh, I hate it, no compassion from anybody!!

Re: Insensitive People

I had been putting off my surgery in order for it to be the best time possible to be off from work. Waited for the holiday season to be over and then a move of the office. I was trying to coordinate it with a trade show in the spring and other's vacation schedules. My boss knew this since i wanted to give him as much time to prepare for my extended abscense as possible Always the thoughtful and responsible one...

Well, one week after the office move and two and a half weeks before my surgery, they laid me off. Great. Sure I can start looking for a new job the next day!

So I had 2.5 weeks of waiting for my surgery. Finally had it last week. I will start really looking for a new job when I am well enough to interview.

But I am grateful that my insurance is still in effect and the old employer was "kind" enough to keep it going through September. And I am grateful that I have a very supportive boyfriend, family and a couple of true close friends. I am looking at this as finally being on the other side of miserable pain and the opportunity to restart my life. Most of all, I have finally learned the lesson that I come first. Not my job ever again.

Thank you sisters for being here and sharing the highs and the lows. You all have made a huge difference in my journey!

Re: Insensitive People

While my husband and my 11 yr old daughter have been absolute gems about this process (probably because they have been there through all of the pain and blood transfusions) I find myself kind of freaked out about the work aspect. This type of surgery is so personal that I have no desire to share what I am having done and very few people in my small company I work for know. That being said I run the actual office and the owner of the company expects me back in less than a week even though I have explained that the surgery I am having done takes 4-8 weeks to heal. I did my best to plan this surgery to happen during our "slow" season and will work from home as I am able (thank goodness for tele-working!) This I guess is partly my own fault as I have purposely made myself indispensable to insure I always have a job. That I guess is blowing up in my face a bit now. I just feel backed in to a corner now. While my boss is being insensitive to my surgery, I guess I also brought this on my self? Feeling very over whelmed! Another guy had hernia surgery and only took a few days off for the same reason, and yet another had full out back surgery and was back in less than a week. I just feel pressured to hurry back!

I hate hearing stories like this because it seems as if they did this because of the scheduled surgery. Shame.

to new beginnings! All the best on your recovery.

Pene,

You have to do what is best for you to heal also. Working from home is a great compromise. But, don't push yourself too much. You will regret it. You must rest in order to heal.

Warm wishes!

Don't let them pressure you. I know you keep hearing this but you get ONE chance to heal properly and if that is messed up it can have lifelong consequences.

No job is worth breaking yourself over. Your health and long term quality of life is worth more than they can ever pay you.

Please put your physical needs first. You can't just re-do this time of healing. I figure that my former employer actually did me a favor by letting me go. Otherwise, I would have felt like you do, needing to hurry back in order for the office to keep functioning and in order for me to have a job. Well I have learned again that business is business and that those who run it will do what they think they need to for the business. And that's okay. It is up to me (and you) to make sure I take care of me.

I can put off the bills for a bit but I can't put off my health and well being. Please take care of YOU and let the other chips fall where they may. You, your family THEN the job.

Hugs!
