Finally have a date, May 11th for the surgery..few questions

Dh is taking vacation to be with me, and he is all ready worried about what to cook during that time. Will I even feel like eating afterwards? Should I just buy those Carnation Instant breakfast shakes or Insure or something?

TIA,
Sherri

Hi Sherri,

After my surgery, I didn't feel like eating a whole lot. But you want to have a balanced diet to insure proper healing. Things that worked for me were easy to prepare items, like soup, sandwiches, etc.

Tell him not to stress too much. If he's there to help, you can get by with easy to fix things. You could also prepared things now to freeze like casseroles, etc that he could just pop in to the oven.

Finally have a date, May 11th for the surgery..few questions

For about 2 days after I got home, I only wanted simple foods. Then, true to my nature, I started wanting everthing again! I remember my husband taking me to a local Italian restaurant after I had my 10 day checkup/staple removal. It was 19 degrees F. outside, and I ordered the best minestrone soup ever. It had everything in it and I'll never forget how good that was.

I'm only a few days post-op. So far, I've found that my appetite is minimal. I'm making an effort to eat small meals with a well-balanced diet with food high in protein and food with fiber. The protein helps you heal faster and the fiber helps with the BM issues. So far, I've found I cannot eat hard food. The hospital served roast pork the first meal after my surgery. Don't know what they were thinking.

hi sherri, oddly i was hungry as soon as the anesthesia wore off.
i started w/ all the clear liquid stuff on the tray that was left before i woke up. drank lots of liquids too, especially juice and tea.

then, after i knew i tolerated well, i went and raided the little kitchen on the floor, w/ the nurses permission. part of my walking incentive!!!

stuff like yogart, apple, oatmeal. raisen bran and drank lots of liquids.

i had no nausea at all, so moving onto a soft diet so soon after surgery was ok. i also didn't take any meds, so that may have also helped to prevent nausea and vomiting.

next morning i ate stuff that i never usually eat....like eggs and had turkey and stuffing at lunch w/ veggies.

at home, i have had no restrictions and have eaten things like salads, apples, minnestroni soup, raw and cooked veg's and chicken. pretty much simple food combinations. something about casseroles has yet to sound appealing. can't eat tuna casserole yet. go figure.

i am at 9 days post-op and have been eating normal meals. wishing you the best. m

Finally have a date, May 11th for the surgery..few questions

I have been home 3 days now and don't have much appetite but know I need nutrition so we are eating very small meals. Example. Breakfast today was a half cup dry cereal/milk and coffee. MId morning I had a 4 oz yogurt cup. Lunch was 1 cup soup and half piece of garlic bread. Mid afternoon break was jello. Supper is cup of salad and half cup of ice cream. That's about all except for alot of water. My stomach doesn't want much else and fills up fast.
