Depression after surgery please help.

Hello I had a total hysterectomy on April 27th I am status post 8 days. But feel so lost never in my entire life would I have thought I would have felt this way. I have no friends I can call on to help me. The Anxiety is the worst feeling like I am going to die. I have 3 boys that depend on me so can not do that right now is what I say to myself. I was told by my doctor to start Hormone replacement therapy which I started on April 28th. But I feel so out of it when I do does any one feel like this or have felt like this after starting hormone therapy? I know that there are so many different therapies but am lost as to what they are. Sorry everyone for whining here I just am so very lost in my life after this surgery right now. If anyone out there can help with some suggestions? God bless

Hi theone,

I am sorry you are struggling without any extra support. I am glad you found us though! Here is a link to our forum for Hormone and Menopause Central https://www.hystersisters.com/vb2/forumdisplay.php?f=237 You will find some excellent support there. Here is a link to articles here on this website about hormones https://www.hystersisters.com/vb2/view_hoj.htm

Also, here is the link to the date thread for your hysterectomy date. You will find a group of sisters who had surgery the same week you did and who support each other through recovery. https://www.hystersisters.com/vb2/sho...479368&page=15

Do you have a local church who can provide some meals or assistance for you?

Re: Depression after surgery please help.

I am so sorry theone! I can't relate completly because I did keep both ovaries but I did have some days where I was totally out of wack and super depressed. I myself don't understand the hormone therapy but there is a ton of support here. IF one type of therapy does not seem to be working for you than ask your doc to try something else. Hang in and we are all here for you! Big Hugs!

Re: Depression after surgery please help.

theone, I am so sorry you are having a hard time. Never feel like you are whining here. We are all here with you and we want to help you get through this rough time. I am on the other side of menopause so I am no longer on hormone replacement therapy. I can tell you that I was on it briefly when I was having the worst of my symptoms and it really helped. As you said, there are many options and I hope you will discuss them with your doctor. Depression and anxiety are not uncommon after this type of surgery. Do you have a GP that you could talk to? Keep posting here and you will get lots of support from women who have been through this. Hang in there and take care. I hope you feel better soon.

Re: Depression after surgery please help.

I am 10 days post op. I had my ovaries left, but I also had a tumor removed from my abdominal area as well. My stomach has a cut 10 inches long across it and I feel myself at times frozen with fear and anxiety. My family and friends have been fantastic and so helpful, so I can't imagine what you are going through. My heart aches for you though. Even just today I felt "homesick" even though I was at home in my own bed. A feeling of anxiety, sadness and fear all wrapped up together and I don't even know why. Please know that you are not alone. Big hugs and happy thoughts being sent your way.

Re: Depression after surgery please help.

I am brand new to this group of women. I am 4 WEEKS post-op and I cry every day. I cried today during the Kentucky Derby. The good news is that I have found out that it is normal and more than that, it's ok....I'm depressed every day of my life, but I just have to find something that I can do to keep me busy.....DO NOT WATCH LIFETIME....you will go broke on Kleenex!!!! THis is my solemn advice!

Re: Depression after surgery please help.

This early in your recovery your body is still coping with the trauma of surgery plus the drastic hormonal fluctuations. You might want to call your dr. About 1.5 - 2 weeks after my surgery, I became very moody - crying non-stop - and telling myself I couldn't do it in front of my 4 year old did nothing. Later I had severe anxiety - pacing the house crying and wringing my hands, also waking up thinking I was dying. Not normal behavior! But, thankfully, it has all subsided. Sometimes we need some time to adjust and get over the shock. Hang in there!!
