Hospital Stay

I'm confused why some places the patient stays 3 or 4 days after a hysterectomy. Is it okay that the dr. is sending me home after 23 hours with a TAH? IT makes me feel that it is early after reading the messages here. My TAH is scheduled for Aug 27th and I CAN'T WAIT!

Re: Hospital Stay

Wow, that sounds very odd to me. I stayed 4 nights. I asked my doctor if I could go home after 3 nights and he said, no way.

Re: Hospital Stay

Gosh, that does sound very quick. I didn't even have my catheter or IV out after 23 hours!

I was in the castle for 4 days, and very nearly 5.

If YOU don't feel ready, don't go. I would personally have been in no state.

good luck!

Re: Hospital Stay

I echo the other responses. I experienced the most pain at about hour 26, still had a catheter too and an IV. If you have any say in the matter, don't let them send you home. IMHO

Hi, I am looking at a 3 day hospital stay and I have the same question! What should I take? I have many other questions also.

Re: Hospital Stay

Seems early to go home to me. I had a TAH/BSO and I stayed 2 nights. My surgery was wed morning and I went home on friday afternoon.

The only thing I used that I took with me to the hospital was my toothbrush and toothpaste, my shampoo, my son's Ipod, and one of the nightshirts i took....otherwise i used what the hospital supplied. The only thing I would have used would have been a laptop if I owned one.

Re: Hospital Stay

I had surgery at 2:30 got to my room at 7:00 and was discharged the next day at about 4:00. My doctor told me at pre-op it would be a 23 hour stay but she would not force me nor let me go home if I didn't feel ready.

Re: Hospital Stay

I had SAH on a Wednesday at 1 p.m., and was given the option to go home on Thursday afternoon, so a little more than 24 hours!

But because I didn't want to go home with a catheter (my bladder hadn't woken up yet), I decided to stay an extra night, hoping that would give my bladder time. So I wound up going home Friday evening (with a catheter!!!).

So, in the hospital a little over 48 hours, but could have left sooner.

Re: Hospital Stay

That's exactly what I thought! 23 hr doesn't seem long enough for TAH. Well, I guess we will see next week how long they do keep me. Hopefully I will feel good enough to go home but it scares me to be sent home on Percocet if I'm really hurting.

Re: Hospital Stay

Hi piano88!

My surgery was "textbook" with no complications or post-op issues, and even so...I wasn't released from the hospital until day 3 post-op and I would not have wanted to have been sent home any sooner. My gynecologist even advised me in advance that 3 days was the minimum for a major surgery of this kind.

Is it possible you misunderstood or mis-heard your doctor? In any case, I echo the advice of the others who said not to go home until you feel well enough to do so.
