Confirmation letter arrived - Lack of detail

I have to say i am surprised by the lack of information i have been given in my letter. I have no pre op appointment. I got a very basic leaflet that was sent with the letter and I don't even have a time! I have to phone the day before to confirm my appointment and then they will give me a time.

Hi Lisa Maree -

That is puzzling that your letter is so scarce on details . Maybe call your doctor to confirm that you do not have a pre-op appointment. Also ask if there are any pre-op instructions. Typically, you are restricted from taking certain meds, Vitamin supplements, fish oil pills, and other items for a couple of weeks prior to surgery. There are sometimes dietary restrictions the day before surgery.

Re: Confirmation letter arrived - Lack of detail

I had a very detailed pamphlet for my surgery. I too, had a date but had to call after 200 pm the day before to get the time. How frustrating is that. On top of that, I was doing the pre op bowel prep when I had to call..

I asked when she call to tell me that i had an appointment if i had a pre-op appointment and they said no. The pamphlet say not to eat or drink after midnight the night before. Nothing about bowel prep. Also says there are no facility for your support person to wait with you. It says shower the day before but that is about it!

Not all surgeons require a bowel prep, so if it is not mentioned, don't do one.
I had similar instructions, however, I had a pre op, EKG, lungs XRays, blood work, etc.
If you have questions not answered by your letter, please call.

Re: Confirmation letter arrived - Lack of detail

There is a wide variety of how things are done pre-op. I had a vague leaflet. I had no bowel prep, had to wash two days in a row with antibacterial soap, and nothing by mouth past midnight. My pre-op appt was over the phone with an RN. I had pre-op blood work, but no other tests, just a quick physical from my GP and paperwork for her to complete. It's difficult for the surgeon to give us a surgery time too far in advance. The OR slate is complicated and they are juggling scheduled surgeries along with emergency surgeries, so often patients are told the morning of their surgery what time they're booked for.

Hang in there ladies, and we will see you on the other side!
