Hysterectomy in 3 weeks- lots of fears
Just got my date a few days ago. I am supposed to have a laparascopic hysterectomy on March 6. My doctor wants to remove my ovaries as well but I have requested that she leave them unless there is a problem. I have so many worries, maybe I should just address them one at a time. One of my big concerns is weight gain and aging. My sister keeps telling me I am going to gain weight and that terrifies me. I have also heard some people say that they got old. I have always had a young look and I don't want to lose that. I am a twin and I don't want to be identified as the fat old twin. Maybe seems a petty fear but it terrifies me. I am 49 and will be 50 in April.

Re: Hysterectomy in 3 weeks- lots of fears
Hi ((Janman)). Being worried and nervous about your hysterectomy is very normal. You have never done this before and the "unknown" can be very scary to us. I am so glad that you found HysterSisters before your surgery. I didn't know very much about my surgery until I found HS. Remember that we are here for you each step of the way.
Please don't be terrified about gaining weight after your surgery. That is not an automatic thing after a hysterectomy. What research shows is a very logical mathematical equation: if your calorie intake is more than you burn off, you will gain weight and . . . if your calorie intake is less than you burn off, you will lose weight. This is true right now before your surgery and it will be true on the other side. Weight gain can happen if we eat all of our comfort foods (especially during the emotional times after surgery) and fail to eat those foods which are healthy. Some gain weight, some lose weight, and some stay the same. I am including a link to an HS article below.
All that being said, if there is a medical condition that causes weight gain (or weight loss) a hysterectomy is not going to change that. I did not gain weight, I am losing weight.
Getting older -- I am 62. I had a GYN appointment last week and when the nurse was checking weight, BP, etc., she looked at my age and said "you can't be 62". I asked her how old she thought I was and she said "you look 50". Needless to say, I told her I would love her forever. Here is an article about going gray that I thought you would find interesting.

Try not to be fearful -- look forward to your better health. Just think -- you could be the younger looking and thinner twin.
on your surgery. We will see you on the other side.

Re: Hysterectomy in 3 weeks- lots of fears
I looked at my hysterectomy as a time of new beginning. At 49 I wanted to keep my ovaries too. Initially my surgeon told me that most women want everything out. But she agreed if the ovaries were healthy they would stay. My ovaries were healthy and so far are doing their job.
During my online research I saw a lot of references to hysterectomy and a 25 pound weight gain. Most of these sites were not reputable sites. I have made changes to my diet introducing more positive food choices. I have always been a walker and have increased my amount of exercise. As a result of these new changes I have lost 20 pounds.
I wish you a sucessful surgery and uneventful recovery. Cheers to renewed good health

Re: Hysterectomy in 3 weeks- lots of fears
Welcome to the site!
I have just completed my tenth day after my surgery and I have to tell you that I am loving eating comfort foods but know that I have to get back on track and eat more healthy food I know that eating healthy foods and going back to my normal exercising is going to ensure that I don't gain weight
I understand your fear and let me reassure you that the surgery while complex was nothing to be fearful of.
after the surgery I was in pain but not as much as what I thought I did lots of training in my abdomen and strength exercises and working out and eating right and made it through the surgery just fine
as I mentioned I'm on my second week and I'm back to studying for my PMP certification and playing with my dogs and enjoying the rest and relaxation at home before going back to work to my crazy job
as long as you eat the right foods and take very good care of yourself then you won't be known as the fat twin
I look great for my age I'm 43 and people always tell me that I always look younger so I don't think that having a hysterectomy makes you look older. my sister had her hysterectomy 10 years ago and she looks amazing
