Premarin or Not ?

Had my hysterectomy (kept ovaries) in Aug 2008, everything else taken out.

Had my FSH level taken last week, it was 80 ! Doc wants to put me on Premarin. I've read so much NEGATIVE stuff about it.

I blew a cyst out on my left over last oct. I went in for a check up last week, and my ovaries have literally shrunk and are useless (not producing estrogen).

What to do now ?

I have severe hot flashes in the middle of the night, interrupted sleep, dry skin, vaginal area dry, etc.

ANY help would be appreciated. (I'm scared to take the Premarin).

I ws on oral premarin for 16 yrs. I decided to stop using it as it was giving me constant heartburn towards the end. It worked well for stopping my hot flashes, etc.
You could always give it a try and see if it helps and if it doesn't just stop taking it. I know some people hate it for what it's made from but some women find it works very well for them. You would have to try it to see if it works for you.

There are plenty of women who use Premarin and do very well on it. I hope they will be along to share their experiences with you.

If you don't want to try Premarin, there are lots of other estrogen options you can ask to try. There's information about them in articles 8 - 13 in this resource: Hormone Jungle Articles.

It might take trying different estrogens, doses and/or methods of delivery to find the right one for you. Maybe you could ask your doctor for samples so you can get an idea of what you do and don't like.

I'm about 10 weeks post op, TVH, kept ovaries. I am 57 and was menopausal before surgery. Since my surgery my doc has me using 1 gram of premarin cream twice a week - to "keep things moist and nubile". Should I be nervous using the cream twice a week? Has anyone else used that?
I still have several hot flashes per day and always a couple during the night. I'm looking for a good OTC for that ... any suggestions would be welcome!

I wouldn't use it because of the source it comes from but that is just my opinion; If I end up needing to take HRT it would more than likely be a synthetic version. Other than that my symptoms are not too bad to warrant any medications.
