How Long is Long Enough?
Hi Slick,
I am also a paralegal, I work for two attorneys in a firm of about 30.
I was granted 6 weeks leave by my doctor (after already having had 2 for an initial surgery). I took 7 weeks of leave without pay. My firm was very much of the mind you come back when you are ready and able. Possibly their understanding, apart from being genuinely understanding people, was due to the fact that the 'beginning' of my surgeries happened at work where I was when I began hemorraghing and had to be rushed to the emergency room. Also our managing partner's wife had had a hyster some years before so he knew that it would be some time before I was right.
My employer was great, and even three weeks after my return HR asked me if I was okay and wanted to reduce my hours.
Even at 7 weeks I feel I returned too early. I should have returned reduced hours, it was another 3 weeks before I felt like I was coping.
When you do return, please take advantage of your file clerk if you have one. I always found it quicker to get my own files, but please DO NOT carry those files around the office. I 'forgot' one day and relocated a big pile of files and suffered for the rest of the day. Do not move your file storage shelves yourself (we have those on rollers and it can cause enormous strain pushing/pulling tones of paper!!!!) even at 3 months post op moving these has caused me some pain/swelling.
Just take care and go at your own pace.
Your boss isnt a physician and has no right to tell you what to expect in recovery.

How Long is Long Enough?
I expected to be back to normal by the 2nd or 3rd week. Boy was I surprised!!! I was beginning to function at 4 weeks but barely. The 5th week has shown good improvement and I think I would be able to work most of a day by the 6th week.
Each week is better IF you do not overdo the week before!!!! Talk to your doctor!!! Perhaps he can help.

How Long is Long Enough?
Hi Slick,
So sorry your boss is being such a jerk. Just remember karma usually pays back these soughts of jerks. I like the idea of sending him to pelvic floor.com so he can watch the video what they do to us. Also like the idea of how he cope with testes surgery. LOL
When my husband gets sick he does what most guys do and lays around like his dying. I often tell him in my next life I'm coming back a man and marrying him just to watch him go through the things I have......eg childbirth for a starter LOL
Though I must say he has just been so wonderful since my hyster because I was sick for quite some time.
Hope you can get this guy to understand that this is major surgery. Wishing you well...............Karen
