1/2 a cervix--is that right for an LSH???

I had an LSH/BSO 2/24/05 and I was under the impression that I was keeping my cervix---I found out today that I only have part of it? what brought this up was I was mentioning when I go downstairs I feel I have to hold my stomach since I feel it is going to drop and the comment was well good thing you have part of your cervix--I said WHAT--then I was told that the uterus and cervix are attached and when the uterus was cut he had to take part of the cervix--

Please any advice would make me feel better--is this correct? should I have been told??

Don't panic!

This is normal and necesary... It means your surgeon did a good job!

The lining of your uterus (endometrium) is attached to the cervix - when the uterus is removed a thin layer of the cervix should be taken too, to ensure there are no endometrial cells left that can either cause problems later - or a mini-period.

I had a SAH - and have the same part of my cervix remaining. It is good news, so please don't stress... I also had a fibroid dissected out of mine too.

It is a shame your surgeon didn't explain your surgery to you in more detail though

hope this helps

Hi, Keri...

There is no official dividing line between the uterus and the cervix--it is all one organ. The cervix is just the opening of the uterus. To know exactly where one ends and the other begins is really impossible unless you were to scrape some cells during surgery and look at them under a microscope. The surgeon just makes his or her best guess. As Chicky said, if the surgeon went a little farther down into the cervix, that's probably not a bad thing.

Did your doc say that there was a particular reason he had to take "part of the cervix?" You should probably just ask if this was normal procedure or if there was something specific about part of your cervix that needed to be removed. It's probably the former, but you'd probably feel better to have that confirmed!

This sounds ok to me. My surgeon stated that she would cut down into the cervix after removing the uterus and then would cauterize it. I have not had any bleeding at all, even right after surgery I only lost about a tablespoon.

I feel no difference from how I felt prior to my hysterectomy. Have you talked further with your doctor yet?

Best wishes and continued good recovery!
