Bowel Preps - Samples?
I'm preparing for my second surgery to remove my tubes and ovaries.
When I had my first surgery (removal of uterus and cervix only), my obgyn gave me a sample of the bowel prep. The specialist that I am seeing now, wants me to do a bowel prep. My insurance won't cover it and it costs $60.00. Do specialists have samples they can give so I don't have to pay this out-of-pocket expense? If they wrote a prescription out for it, would it even be worth asking for a sample instead??

Re: Bowel Preps - Samples?
I was able to purchase mine over-the-counter. That was ten years ago so I don't remember how much it cost me, but it was under $10. Call your doctor what kind of prep he requires. You may be able to pick one up at your pharmacy for a few dollars.

Wow, that is expensive! My doctor is having me use (OTC) Magnesium Citrate--only $1.34 for the bottle. Check with your doctor to see if you can use this.

Re: Bowel Preps - Samples?
I got in touch with my doctors office, and the nurse advised they will put me on myralax instead, and it should only cost me about $6.00. Much better than $60!!! It's a powder that i'll be mixing with gatorade. Thats all I know at this point. Anyone ever have this?

Yes, I know it works very well for constipation! I imagine they will have you take a bigger dose to clean you out good. It doesn't have any taste but does give a different kind of texture to whatever you mix with it. Good luck and I'm glad you found something much cheaper!

Re: Bowel Preps - Samples?
I'm glad you were able to find a bowel prep that fit your budget better. I sure would not like to spend that kind of $$ on a bowel prep, either!
And for calling to ask for a different suggestion right from the doctor.
I've used the Mirilax tablets as part of a bowel prep for a colonoscopy, and it worked well. Frankly, I think they all work just about the same -- but it's important to make sure your is OK with what you use because different bowel preps may effect your hydration levels differently, which can have an impact on your care at the .
One thing to note is that they give you a time range for the prep to "work", and it really can take the outside edge of the time range! When I did my bowel prep for the colonoscopy, it took something like 5-6 hours for anything to happen... so I had a few tense hours there.

Re: Bowel Preps - Samples?
I have to buy a 225 gram bottle of Myralax, and 2 laxative tablets (not sure how to spell it..bisacol...something like that). The two tabs in the AM, and then I mix the bottle of myralax with 64oz of gatorade to take a little later in the day.
I have a feeling i'll be cleaned out before I know it! LOL
