Surgeon's Skill and Patient's Age...how much does it affect recovery?

I have been wondering...just how much does the skill of the surgeon and the stage of life of the patient affect someone's recovery? I am overweight, not terribly fit, and my diet is far from the healthiest, but I have been recovering very well. I've had just the smallest amount of spotting, little to no pain, and I've been driving since after the first week (as per doctor's orders). Believe me, I am delighted. I am just wondering how much of the recovery success is due to my surgeon and the way he handled my surgery. He tells me that what he removed was the size of a hot dog (when I reminded him that he took all of my reproductive organs, he reassessed it to the size of a bratwurst!), so I guess that my shriveled-up, post menopausal insides were easier to remove than a younger woman's. Does anyone have any information on the difference age and the surgeon's skill can make on recovery?

Re: Surgeon's Skill and Patient's Age...how much does it affect recovery?

I think a lot can depend on the surgeons skill.
I know there is one surgeon around here who is known to be a butcher.
It definitely helps if you go to a very skilled surgeon for sure.
And remember the healthy uterus is only the size of an avacado so yours being the size of a bratwurst is probably correct.
I think the general health of the patient does come into affect but also there are elderly people who live full lives into their 90s who say bacon and beer is what made them live that long so really 'healthy' can be a relative term.
But i definitely think the skill of surgeon definitely effects the patients life.
Take care

I was 58, also overweight, although I have always exercised regularly. I had a super easy recovery, I never had pain, never needed narcotics, was out and about just about every day my first week and also drove at a week. Never had any real issues. I do think my surgeon was excellent. I can't count how many people told me that I was in the best possible hands. She also prepared me ahead of time to have an active recovery. She encouraged me to stay active and told me that she was sure that I would bounce back quickly.
